Goedhuis
Plump and pleasant, it is aromatic and intriguingly ‘sauvage' with almost garrigue-like flavoursthat are fleshed out by blackberry and black cherry compote. Calon Ségur has always been a wine with real soul when tasted en primeur that still holds true in 2007. Drink 2011-2022

Neal Martin, June 2017, Score: 87
Tasted at BI Wine Spirits' 10-Years-On tasting, the 2007 Calon Segur has a lovely ferrous bouquet that is just pure Saint Estèphe, maybe a little rustic in style, yet there is presence, impressive intensity and plenty of charm. The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition, not a complex Calon Segur, and you cannot escape the fact that it fades sharply towards the finish. That said, there is freshness in situ, and despite it feeling blocky and broad shouldered, it is the kind of off-vintage Claret that bistros and restaurants love. Drink now because I cannot foresee any improvement in bottle. Tasted February 2017. 87/100. Drink 2017-2026

Robert Parker, April 2010, Score: 87
An elegant, but decidedly earthy wine, the 2007 Calon Segur reveals attractive sweet cherry and red currant fruit intermixed with background soil undertones, and a round, spicy, medium-bodied, finesse-filled style. It should drink well for 7-8 years. Drink: 2010 - 2018

Château Calon-Ségur
The most northerly classified growth in the Médoc, Château Calon-Ségur has had a gracious history. Though he also owned such celebrated châteaux as Lafite and Latour, he would proudly state: "I make my wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is in Calon." He immortalised his affection by creating a heart on the label - a symbol that exists to this day. Calon-Ségur was owned and managed for many years by Mme. Denise Capbern Gasqueton, a magical hostess who captures the essence of La Vieille France with all its tradition, elegance and etiquette. She sadly passed away in 2011 but the inate quality of the vineyards ensures Calon-Ségur's place among the top wines of the appellation.Read less

Region
St Estèphe
St Estèphe is the most northern of Médoc communal crus. Its unique terroir is made up of layers of gravel which are supported by a dense clay base. This subsoil retains water in dry seasons and works particularly well with Merlot, a largely planted variety which is used to flesh out Cabernet Sauvignon. This clay base also creates powerful, textured tannins which enable St Estèphe to stand out from the pack. Like St Julien, it is one of the four most important communal appellations of the Médoc which does not contain any first growths, despite its southern border being a stone'sthrow from Château Lafite. Nonetheless, it is home to some excellent châteaux making fine wines such as Cos d'Estournel, Montrose, Calon Ségur and Lafon Rochet.
