Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, April 2003

This wine really stood out at our tasting of all the Pauillacs. Alfred Tesseron is now making consistently delicious wines and this 2002 is no exception. Sophisticated with polished dark fruit and plenty of mineral flavours to tease the palate, it is very serious indeed.

  • RP

    Robert Parker, April 2005,
    Score: 88

This wine has seemingly gone to sleep and is in a dormant, ungracious stage, exhibiting notes of green tea leaves intermixed with red and black currants in its dusty nose. A medium-bodied wine with moderately high tannin and a certain austerity, it seems to be a much less impressive effort than I thought from barrel or is it just impossibly closed? There is still substantial size and tannic clout to the wine, but the fruit seems to have gone into hiding. As most well-informed insiders in Bordeaux know, proprietor Alfred Tesseron has been doing everything right since 1994 in order to fully develop the enormous potential of this vineyard adjacent to Mouton-Rothschild. Some serious work is done in the vineyard including de-budding,de-leafing, and crop-thinning. The harvest usually takes place in several attempts trying to maximize ripeness and there are two separate sorting tables. Yields have dropped dramatically, and of course there is a severe selection. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2020+.

    James Suckling, April 2003,
    Score: 92-94

Super aromas of currants, berries and minerals, with hints of flowers. Full-bodied, with a lovely core of fine tannins and a medium to long finish. Very fine indeed. Alfred Tesseron is making excellent wine close to every year now.

Producer

Château Pontet-Canet

This star has been rising since 1994 when Alfred Tesseron began practicing Draconian-like measuresto extract the most potential from his top Pauillac property. Some of the advances include debudding, de-leafing and severe crop thinning. Unlike many advanced Bordeaux cellars, their vinification vats are not set on "auto pilot" but are manually and meticulously controlled. They understand the needs of each vintage vary and respond accordingly.

Region

Pauillac

Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
