Burghound, January 2001, Score: 90-92
Color of ink, explosively spicy fruit of unusual complexity, resoundingly bold, rich yet fine flavors that also sport depth. This is all velvet and silk. Undeniably of grand cru quality. Drink: 2004-2011.Comments: outstanding!

Burghound, January 2002, Score: 92
Malconsorts is one of the most underrated among the premiers crus of Vosne-Romanée though ironically enough, it is in actuality one of the very best. So why does the vineyard have such a lousy reputation? Simply stated, because Malconsorts has a number of under performing owners, few of who make the most of this wonderful terroir. Happily, there are a few who do make first class examples and Domaine Cathiard is one of them. This offers wonderfully spicy yet subtle aromas of black fruit, hoisin and soy that give way to rich, seductive flavors and prominent but ripe tannins. As sexy as the wine is at the moment, what really sets this apart from the merely very good is the tremendous depth and superb length. To be sure, this is in a somewhat more reserved style than many '99s currently display and it is certainly less forward yet it should prove to be an outstanding cellar candidate because of its exceptional balance. A really lovely, understated Malconsorts that fulfils all of the promise I saw from barrel last November. Drink: 2007-2015.Comments: outstanding!

He only has around 4.25 hectares of vines, therefore the quantity that he makes is particularly small. Traditionally, Burgundy domaines are renowned for being minute in size, and he is definitely amongst the smallest. In addition, he has some of the most exceptional vineyards, which read like a Who's Who list of the Côte de Nuits, many of which are located next to grand crus sites. This combination is lethal for allocations. Too little wine with too many open hands all waiting for their fair share. SInce 2011 his talented son, Sébastien, has been running the domaine.Read less

Region
Vosne Romanée
The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
