Region

Armagnac

Armagnac, like Cognac, is located in the south-west of France, to the south-east of Bordeaux, and has its own AC status. It is the home to France's first ever brandy, dating back to the 15thcentury. Its popularity grew and by the 17th century, the Dutch were importing a substantial amount. The export-led trade declined in the 18th century but by then Armagnac had a sound reputation within France itself. Nowadays, among brandy connoisseurs, Armagnac's reputationcontinues to rise with many delicious long-aged examples on the market. Generally, Armagnac is a richer, earthier spirit than Cognac. It seems to emulate the forests from which it comes, with notes of prune, beech nuts, dark fruits and violet.
