This 100% Chardonnay sourced from the premier cru vineyards around Vertus in the Côte des Blancs is a step up in refinement and complexity and shows off the Goerg group’s skill in the cellar. Brilliant pale lemon yellow with a fine, persistent mousse. Classical Blanc de Blancs characteristics of citrus, orchard fruit, and brioche fill the glass. The base of the blend is 2009, and the palate has a satisfying creamy texture. This modestly priced Blanc de Blancs offers length, breadth and complexity. Goedhuis & Co
This is settling into a deeper presence. It has a freshness that really appeals, along with Taittinger's signature toasty layer of autolysis, grilled nuts and praline. Plenty of flesh and weight on the palate. Acidity clasps ripe peach and mango fruits, finishing long, powerful and fine. Drink now. James Suckling
The 2017 is so delicate and refined, and its complex, restrained aroma of lemon verbena and salty sea spray help it transcend its varietal character. This is so precisely balanced on the mid-palate with a long, fresh, diamond-cut finish. Goedhuis & Co
La Fôret is a climat within Montmains and is distinctive enough to be bottled separately by various producers. The Pinsons’ version has a wonderful saline tension in 2017, given complexity by a touch of light oyster shell reduction. This is racy, tight, long Chablis. Goedhuis & Co
Usually a cuvée of 12 barrels, this year Jean-Philippe scarcely has four. The Meix is often a rich, round style with ripe fruit. In 2016 however it leans more towards an energetic freshness with slightly lighter weight than usual. This change is the result of a difficult growing season for the vineyard was heavily damaged by frost, but in fact detracts not one bit from the enjoyment it offers. Relish its light-footed charm. The southeast facing mid-slope premier cru has produced a plump, satisfying, and fleshy 2017. It blends its juicy stone fruit texture with a chalky persistence on the finish. It will drink well from early on.. Goedhuis & Co
Vibrant Anjou pear and tangerine aromas show very good clarity and pick up suggestions of buttered toast, honey and chamomile with air. Juicy and broad on the palate, offering ripe citrus and orchard fruit flavors that slowly tighten up and take on a floral nuance with aeration. A vanilla flourish sweetens the finish, which hangs on with strong, spicy tenacity. 92 points, Josh Raynolds, Vinous.com
Fermented in French oak barrels (20% new), its influence is subtle and well-matched by the fruit. A juicy and appetising style of New World Chardonnay with Old World grace. Goedhuis & Co
Delicate pale pink, with lovely aromas of raspberries and red berries, with a fine volume and pretty finish. Goedhuis & Co
Arguably Montagne St Emilion’s most sought after property with just a small stream dividing their vineyards and the Grand Cru Classe of St Emilion and the vineyards of Petrus, Gazin and VCC in their sites. This 27 ha estate has made a beautiful merlot based wine (65%) in 2014 Bright ruby, brick red colour, with striking aromas of plums and fresh red cherries. In the palate it is open with appealing plush red fruits , the tannins are soft and succulent, the wine is nicely forward, ideal for immediate drinking. Goedhuis & Co
The Barton style is one of masculinity and power, and whilst the Grand Vin requires patience, this 2nd wine matures a little more quickly. The 2014 has just started to drink incredibly well. The nose has fantastic intensity of dark brambly fruit, the palate is fresh and vibrant, and the fruit is pure, sweet and utterly delicious. With a polished and silky mouthfeel, this is a sure-fire winner amongst claret lovers. Goedhuis & Co
The 2010 Gloria is an ass-kicking, fabulous value once again from this estate, which would probably be classified if the 1855 hierarchy of the wines of the Medoc were ever done again. Abundant notes of cedar wood, fruitcake, flowers, creme de cassis and kirsch are all present in this full-bodied, opulent, dense, dark ruby/purple wine. It is slightly more restrained than the flamboyant 2009, but equal in quality. This is a juicy, well-proportioned, sensationally concentrated, super-ripe Gloria to drink over the next decades. Of course, it is a sleeper of the vintage, given the reasonable price it normally sells for. 93 points, Robert Parker in 2013.
Although there was disagreement in the Goedhuis ranks when we first tasted this wine, a second tasting confirmed that this is a splendid Beychevelle. Indeed RP judges it as the best since 1989. Blended from 49% cabernet sauvignon, 38% merlot, 7%cabernet franc and 6% petit verdot, this is full of lovely red cherry and midsummerfruit. Goedhuis & Co
The stony soils of Longeroies have created a wine with strong Morello cherry aromas. In the palate the natural sweetness of fruit is supported by crisp and tightly integrated tannins. A wine with drive and life. Goedhuis & Co
An old vine cuvée from one of the most famous and sought after appellations in the Cote d'Or. Packed with red fruits and spicy Vosne undertones on the nose, the palate has layered intensity and opulence. This has class and typicity with excellent depth and length on the finish. Goedhuis & Co
This comes from 0.25-hectares of 45-year-old vines. It has a crisp, slightly foursquare bouquet at the moment, with tertiary-led red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with dense but juicy tannins, plenty of ripe cranberry and wild strawberry fruit and a slight piquancy toward the pointed finish. There is good density here and it should give pleasure over the next decade. Drink 2016-2026 89-91 points, Neal Martin, in 2014
This is the ripest of the three Vosne villages wines yet it retains good freshness and spiciness that adds appeal to the red and dark berry fruit aromas that are trimmed in notes of sandalwood. There is excellent size, weight and mid-palate concentration to the velvety and delicious finish that possesses fine length on the balanced finish. This should drink well both young and with 6 to 8 years of age on it. Outstanding. Top Value. Goedhuis & Co
Here too the nose is both restrained and cool though the aromatic profile is slightly higher-toned though there is just enough earth character to remark upon. There is good volume and punch to the refined middle weight flavors that also exude a discreet minerality on the dusty and mildly austere finish that possesses a good balance. Drink 2020+ 89-91 points, Burghound, tasted in 2014
A well-layered and appealingly fresh combination features various red berries, floral, earth, herbal tea and sauvage hints. There is fine richness to the lively, intense and mineral-driven medium weight flavors that exhibit a distinct salinity on the beautifully complex, well-balanced and firm finale. Good stuff. Outstanding. Drink 2024+ 92 points, Burghound, tasted in 2017
From the exceptional 2010 vintage, this reserve Rioja is exceptional value for its quality. Bright and fresh, the nose is full of succulent red and blue fruits, it has an incredibly fine nose and is dark ruby in colour. It glides effortlessly across the silken palate, with concentrated and layered creamy fruits, but is so well balanced it retains great lift and freshness. Flavours of plum intermingle with hints of cedar and sweet spices. This is incredibly polished with velvety-smooth tannins and a long flavourful finish. Everything is in harmony and it really is irresistible now. Goedhuis & Co
Le Difese is instantly gratifying. A swirl of the glass produces beautiful fresh fruity aromas of red berries and ripe strawberries, with a hint of cherry blossom. The palate is mid-weight, fresh and immensely drinkable. The 2016 is a hugely pleasurably blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon with 30% Sangiovese giving abundant crunchy, juicy red fruits; bright red cherry, strawberry and minerals. Expertly balanced and utterly moreish. At this price point there are few wines that can compare to this charming mid-week drinker. Goedhuis & Co
The wines of Riecine are a Goedhuis favourite. They follow 100% organic techniques and are gradually introducing biodynamic principles. Plump and silky with fresh, enticing notes of crunchy cherry and strawberry. It is not too heavy or rich but rather elegant and linear. A wonderful wine that comes highly recommended. Goedhuis & Co
Made from Nebbiolo growing in northwest Italy’s Piedmont region by one of the appellation’s most respected producers. A ruby red with powerful aromas of concentrated, ripe red and black fruits. The rich fruit aroma is lifted by a herbal hint. A textured palate with notes of berries, violets, and liquorice has ripe but firm tannins, brisk acidity, and a lingering finish of dried cherries. Goedhuis & Co
This is an exciting new addition to our list this year. These vineyards in the cool Cienega Valley, California’s smallest AVA, have been under vine since 1849. Its mere 20 miles from the Pacific Coast give the region a cooling maritime influence, and its limestone soils are perfect for growing Pinot Noir. The 2016 is a delicately violet-scented, strawberry-fruited Pinot Noir. There is a supple ripeness to the fruit set against plenty of acidity thanks to the valley’s deep diurnal range, where the fruit cools down over night and enjoy chilly mornings before being drenched in that gorgeous Californian sun. It is thus a wine of “lift and brightness”, owner Christian Pillsbury explains, rather than density and power. Goedhuis & Co
