The nose has that wild briarwood spice and savoury umami hints of whole-bunch, coupled with dried wild raspberry notes that is immediately inviting and delicious, with touches of brown sugar. The palate has a supple entry, and a really elegant mouthfeel, helped by bright acidity that carries the sweetly maturing mid-ripe loganberry and bilberry. More flavours abound with swirling with notes of tobacco leaf and mint touches. It has such fine integrated tannins, a great structure, and great length to boot.

Lambrays is known for its use of whole bunch fruit, and 2016 sees 85% used during the fermentation of its grand cru. This gives the wine a brilliant ruby colour, a deliciously pretty aroma of fragrant red fruits and the unforced, elegant freshness of classical Pinot Noir on the palate, encased in the serious structure of grand cru stature. 50% new oak supports the complex dimensions of this outstanding wine, whose melodic tannins flow with ease.

The 2016 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru includes 85% whole bunch fruit and is matured in 50% new oak. It was picked around 24 to 29 September. It has a fresh and discrete bouquet at first, the whole bunch influencing the red fruit, infusing scents of autumn leaves and Earl Grey into the mix. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, good grip in the mouth, building with time to a very composed, classically style, quite persistent and lightly spiced finish whereby the whole bunch is completely subsumed by the fruit. An overtly floral suffused nose offers up ripe aromas of red currant, rose petal, plum and a hint of exotic spice. There is first-rate punch to the bigger and richer yet still well-defined medium weight plus flavors that possess very good if not exceptional length on the nicely complex finish. This is certainly pretty but it doesn't appear, at least at this early juncture, to have the class and sheer substance of either the 2014 or the 2015. Time will of course tell but for the moment, I would describe the 2016 Clos des Lambrays as very good rather than excellent. Drink: 2028+

Healthy dark red. Captivating perfume of red berries, spices and flowers lifted by a sexy herbal element from the stems. Silky, dense and concentrated, showing terrific precision and a sappy personality to its complex flavors of red berries, brown spices, underbrush and dried flowers. Lovely fruit intensity here. Very firm and built to age but even today there is nothing hard about this grand cru. Finishes very long and sweet, with refined tannins. I'm not sure that this wine will ever go through an extended sullen phase in bottle.

Vinified with 85% whole cluster fruit, the 2016 Clos des Lambrays wafts from the glass with a brooding bouquet of blueberry, wild berries, smoked duck, spice and rosehip. The wine is sappy, with lovely depth and concentration, a fine but firm structural chassis, succulent acids, and a long, penetrating finish. An elegant rendition of this wine in its largest harvest since 1999. Drink 2026-2045

60 m difference between the top and bottom of Clos. Harvest 24-29 September. 39hl/ha, 30% more than in 2015. 50% new and 50% second-use barrel. Bright cherry red. Fresh and intense and lacy. Easy peasy – so easy to like. Dry end. Youthful but fresh and lively. Long. Rich and exciting. Quite dry end but with lots of interest chiselled into this. Drink 2020-2035

This Morey Saint Denis domaine may have passed through various owners over the recent decades, but one noticeably steadfast mark on Burgundy’s landscape has been Thierry Brouin, making the wines at this iconic estate since 1979 until his retirement in 2017. His signature style of whole bunch vinification for the grand cru has carved an esteemed place for Thierry in Burgundy’s story. The domaine was recently purchase by Bernard Arnault of LVMH, and a new régisseur has been installed. Boris Champy has nearly 10 years’ experience in the Côte d’Or working at Louis Latour, and before that in California and Bordeaux. He and Thierry worked closely alongside each other in 2017, ensuring a smooth handover. Tantalisingly short of a monopole, the domaine owns 8.66 hectares of the 8.8 ha Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru in the heart of Morey Saint Denis. As well as the substantial Clos, the domaine also has vines in premier cru and village sites within Morey, and added two small premier cru plots in Puligny Montrachet in the 1990s.

Clos des Lambrays
Clos des Lambrays is a Grand Cru appellation situated in the commune of Morey St Denis in the Cote de Nuits. The 8.8 hectares of land, largely owned by the Saier family, were elevated from Premier Cru to Grand Cru status in 1979 as the vineyards clearly had huge potential. Nestled between Gevrey Chambertin to the north and Chambolle Musigny to the south the best Clos des Lambrays wines combine the feminine delicacy of Chambolle with the power and structure of Gevrey.
