    A prize 1er Cru adjoining Vosne Romanée les Malconsorts. A full and intense wine, with excitement and energy. This has bags of character and depth with an amazing persistence on the finish.

    The 2013 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots has a similar nose to the '13 Roncier with slightly less mineralité at the moment. The palate is crisp and fresh, a little spicier here than either the Roncier or Pruliers, with a dash of black pepper enlivening the finish. There is plenty of charm here, although contrasting the two barrel samples, I suspect that the Roncier will possess more complexity in the long run. Drink: 2016 - 2030

    (from 70+ year old vines). Gentle but not invisible wood serves as a backdrop for spicy and distinctly earthy red and dark currant aromas that possess an unusual yet interesting top note of dried tangerine peel. As is the case with many of the Grivot 2013s the mouth feel of the middle weight plus flavors is relatively fine thanks to the refined if firm tannins that shape and support the suave, powerful and mouth coating finale. This moderately firm effort will also need all of 12 years or so to reveal its full potential. Worth considering. Drink 2025+

    Quite an unctuous aroma. Deep, crushed velvet. This is the most successful of the three, but as with the previous two NSG I am not quite so happy with the tannin. A more structural style. Needs time to resolve. I would like to have seen it more Vosne in style. Score 17

Domaine Etienne Grivot (formerly Jean Grivot)

One of the most famous names in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Grivot dates back to the nineteenth century. Over the years and marriages, the domaine grew to include vineyards in notable appellations such as Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne, the fifth generation of the family to run the estate, returned to Burgundy from work experience in California in the 1980s. He eventually took over from his father completely in 1990. Over time and through experience, Etienne has created his own style of wine, which many tasters consider to be growing in elegance. The wines remain powerful and rich, true vins de garde, which usually need several years of cellaring to soften and develop. Those patient enough to wait know that the wines of Etienne Grivot are exceptional. In 2012 his children Mathilde and Hubert joined him at the family domaine, and the three share a united vision. It is a harmonious and collaborative family team. They eschew the trend for analysing every drop of juice, and pay much more attention to the vegetative cycle of their vines. The year’s weather conditions will dictate how the team handles the grapes in the cellar far more than the complex chemical analyses which comes back from the lab.

Nuits Saint Georges

The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
