    Sadly production was down 50% for this fine vineyard which lies alongside Bonnes Mares, because it is a quite glorious cuvée. Lots of black winter fruits and hints of Christmas spice. It is bright and fresh, with a natural purity. Fine length with telltale of Chambolle silkiness on the finish.

    Here the reduction is heavy and it not only crushes the fruit but it also extends to the palate and experience has proven that this is never a good thing. To be fair, reduction in the mouth isn't necessarily fatal but it is a serious warning sign that the wine may not clean up. There is excellent underlying material and it is on this that I base my provisional range but with an important question mark added. Drink: 2028+

    Bright, dark red; these 2016s all have inviting limpid colors. Slightly reduced aromas of red berries, mocha and soil. Fleshier and more concentrated than the Morey-Saint-Denis Les Millandes, with its sweet dark fruit and spice flavors cut by musky minerality. At once silkier and more backward than the Millandes, finishing with substantial ripe tannins. With its rocky complexity, this wine reminded me of a mini-Bonnes Mares.

The Sérafin family are part of the establishment in Gevrey Chambertin. From when he took over from his father in the 1960 until his recent retirement, if you ever want to get in touch with Christian, you either had to call him as the rooster crowed in the morning or long after the sun had set. The rest of the time, he was working out in the vines or deep in his cellars. The domaine is now run by cousins Frédérique and Karine who are continuing the family tradition of making bold and structured wines. Their Pinots benefit from a period of bottle age and typically express fine tertiary characteristics. They do not fine or filter their wines, and only rack when necessary. Not shy of new oak, they use up to 50% on their straight Bourgogne and often 100% on the rest of their cuvées depending on the concentration. The wines tend to be ample and fleshy, and the richest ones need some cellaring in order to better integrate the spicy, cedarwood flavours.Read less

Chambolle Musigny

The wines of Chambolle Musigny are like no other. They can be superbly delicate, yet mindblowingly complex. Of all the northern Burgundy appellations, they are the most ethereal, and as a result the most feminine. Most of the Chambolle Musigny vineyard area is encompassed in its Village and Premier Cru appellations including the robust Beaux Bruns, the splendidly mineral Le Cras and the poised yet powerful Les Amoureuses. It produces only two Grand Crus - the round and rich Bonnes Mares which it shares with Morey St. Dénis, as well as what could be described as the Stradivarius of grand crus, Musigny.
