  • Goedhuis, November 2018

With 2.7 hectares across nine lieux dits in the village, it is no surprise the Grivots make a paradigm Vosne Romanée. It is a charming wine in 2017; pale ruby, with a sweetly spiced perfume. The palate shows delicate fluidity in its satin-like tannins.

  • Neal Martin, January 2019, Score: 88-90

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Village has a pleasant bouquet of raspberry and crushed strawberry tinged with fig, the 15% new oak lending a little more presence. The balanced, natural palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin, displaying a fine thread of acidity from start to finish and offering flavors of juicy red cherry, raspberry and vervain tea. There is impressive length here. 2020 - 2030

  • Burghound, January 2019

An overtly spicy and appealingly fresh, cool and pure nose reflects notes of black pinot fruit, violet, Asian tea and a wisp of anise. There is both good volume and mid-palate fleshiness to the delicious and seductively textured flavors that culminate in an agreeably punchy, focused and mildly austere finale. Like the Lavières, this is sufficiently tightly wound to need at least some patience and has the stuffing to reward up to a decade of cellaring. Drink 2025+

  • Decanter, December 2018, Score: 92

The Grivots make some very smart wines at premier and grand cru level, but don't overlook this village Vosne, made with grapes from 10 parcels and six different terroirs. It's a classic expression of 2017: fresh, juicy and scented, with supple tannins, plenty of succulent red berry fruit, and stylishly integrated 20% new wood. Pure pleasure in the glass. One of the most famous names in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Grivot dates back to the nineteenth century. Over the years and marriages, the domaine grew to include vineyards in notable appellations such as Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne, the fifth generation of the family to run the estate, returned to Burgundy from work experience in California in the 1980s. He eventually took over from his father completely in 1990. Over time and through experience, Etienne has created his own style of wine, which many tasters consider to be growing in elegance. The wines remain powerful and rich, true vins de garde, which usually need several years of cellaring to soften and develop. Those patient enough to wait know that the wines of Etienne Grivot are exceptional. In 2012 his children Mathilde and Hubert joined him at the family domaine, and the three share a united vision. It is a harmonious and collaborative family team. They eschew the trend for analysing every drop of juice, and pay much more attention to the vegetative cycle of their vines. The year’s weather conditions will dictate how the team handles the grapes in the cellar far more than the complex chemical analyses which comes back from the lab.Read less

Region

Vosne Romanée

The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
