    This excellent premier cru, in the middle of the village, just below Clos de la Roche, has produced a broad wine, with a fine degree of brightness, subtle fresh acidity, a tight kernel of tannins and great drive of fruit on the finish. Explosive and dramatic.

    A pungent nose is presently composed of strong reduction and wood toast. On the plus side there is excellent punch to the overtly muscular big-bodied flavors that possess impressive mid-palate density before culminating in a firm, very serious and moderately austere finale where notes of wood and minerality surface.     Bright medium red. Totally different on the nose than the preceding wines from Gevrey-Chambertin, showing a slightly reduced quality to its aromas of raspberry, smoke, iron, spices and earth and a bit less fruity/floral lift. Silky on entry, then a bit rougher in texture in the middle palate. Solid but a touch rustic, not showing the concentration or sweetness of the Gevreys; I wanted a bit more fruit. Finishes with serious tannins.

The Sérafin family are part of the establishment in Gevrey Chambertin. From when he took over from his father in the 1960 until his recent retirement, if you ever want to get in touch with Christian, you either had to call him as the rooster crowed in the morning or long after the sun had set. The rest of the time, he was working out in the vines or deep in his cellars. The domaine is now run by cousins Frédérique and Karine who are continuing the family tradition of making bold and structured wines. Their Pinots benefit from a period of bottle age and typically express fine tertiary characteristics. They do not fine or filter their wines, and only rack when necessary. Not shy of new oak, they use up to 50% on their straight Bourgogne and often 100% on the rest of their cuvées depending on the concentration. The wines tend to be ample and fleshy, and the richest ones need some cellaring in order to better integrate the spicy, cedarwood flavours.Read less

Morey Saint Denis

Morey St. Dénis often suffers from an identity crisis. They are more fruit forward than the wines of Gevrey Chambertin, yet more structured than those of Chambolle Musigny. It seems in this sensethat they are like middle children, always wanting to please yet not standing out as the noisy one or the notably quiet one. They are however crowd pleasers and for those who feel that Gevreys are too muscular and Chambolles too feminine; Moreys seem just right, offering velvety tannins and tangible fruit. The village offers five grand cru vineyards including Clos de la Roche, Clos St. Dénis and Clos des Lambrays which nonetheless can rival those of neighbouring villages in terms of quality (some even view them as the best in the Côte de Nuits) and various premier cru vineyards.
