Yet, just as deserving of a place on the Goedhuis list are the superlative entry level bottlings, which are made to the same exacting standards as the top tier wines. From hand harvesting to wild ferments, Kumeu River's village level Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir offer outstanding quality at just £12 and £13 a bottle respectively.

Kumeu River’s 2022 Village Chardonnay is a bright crisp and fresh, offering up lemon balm and nectarine alongside fragrant white flowers. This shows a beautiful tautness on the palate with plenty of zesty fruit and flinty, mineral undertones, leading onto a pleasing salty finish. Mouthwatering, charming and astoundingly good value. The ultimate crowd pleaser and a bottle we reach for time and time again.

  • Vinous, September 2023

The 2022 Kumeu Village Chardonnay is a tender and seamless white that flows easily before tying up rather neatly as it reaches its conclusion. It's like an old friend has just opened their door and welcomed you with arms open before they shut the door, with you safely inside. You can expect honeydew melon, pear and even a saline note. It is rather smart on the medium length finish, its components tying up the wine neatly with a flourish. Clean, precise and lively. Drink 2023-2026.

  • Goedhuis, September 2023

A blend of six different sites, the Estate Chardonnay is made in the classic Kumeu River style. A lively nose, full of lemon sherbet and sweet pastry, its palate is a continuation of a theme with the 20% new oak coming to fore, giving vanilla and a moreish nuttiness to the finish. Delightfully balanced on the palate, there is terrific texture to this everyday drinking white. Drink 2023-2028.

  • Vinous, September 2023, Score: 91

The 2022 Chardonnay Estate is calm, its shoulders are down and its almost succulent in its personality as it makes it debut in your mouth. The acidity is gentle, particularly when compared with the nervosity of 2021. There's a fine textural character that could well be tannin that keeps this giving and leaves you licking your lips. Flavors of nectarine, clove and vanilla-like oak notes make for a rather festive finish (20% new oak). The nectarine-infused length persists making this one that'll slip down easily over the next 3-5 years at the very least. Drink 2023-2028.

  • Vinous, November 2020, Score: 93

Another typically weighty expression from Kumeu's Coddington vineyard, the 2020 Chardonnay Coddington fills the midpalate with its density and breadth. It is a wine of clarity, the oak-derived smoky, nutty notes providing a savory layer over nectarine and lemon meringue. However, this is not a wine that needs multiple flavor descriptors; it's a wine of texture. Expect the smooth, mellow mouthfeel to be followed up with lovely precision and sinew on the lengthy, smoky finish. Drink 2022-2031.
