  • Goedhuis, January 2011

This meaty, fleshy and ultra delicious wine delivers a gorgeous mouthful of roasted coffee, sweet fruit and lots of charisma. Though incredibly charming, its structure is powerful and dense, which is supported by a sleek core of fantastic minerality. Just beautiful.

  • Neal Martin, January 2011, Score: 93-95

Tasted out of barrel at the Domaine. Similar to the Clos de Vougeot, the Clos de Beze demonstrates great mineralité on the nose with tart cherry fruit, raspberry leaf and oyster shells. Great delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with super-fine tannins, very feminine and yet with great focus and power. Redcurrant and raspberry on the front palate, crushed stones on the back. Long in the mouth. Superb.

  • Burghound, January 2011, Score: 92-95

A fresh nose mixes both natural and wood spice together with rose petal, wild red currant and intense earthiness that also suffuses the cool, elegant, admirably pure and beautifully well-detailed flavors that culminate in a linear, austere and hugely long finish. This should be first rate but like all of these grands crus, it will not be an early drinker.

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2011, Score: 17

A little occluded on the nose. Just a bit lacking in focus but there is some easy charming fruit already on the front palate. Then fine tannins on the end.

  • Tim Atkin, February 2011, Score: 94

A wine in which the quality of the vineyard really shines through, this is a bold, textured Grand Cru with ripe aromas, lovely cherry and raspberry fruit and polishedtannins.

They have an embarrassment of riches within their armoury of four 1ers Crus and six exceptional Grands Crus, culminating with plots of both Clos de Bèze and Le Musigny. They also boast one of the finest two storey cellars in the Côte d’Or, built by members of the Prussian military on their way back from the Hundred Years War, with ideal conditions maintaining perfect temperatures for Philippe’s preferred two-year élevage in cask. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.Read less

Chambertin Clos de Bèze

Gevrey-Chambertin has more Grand Crus than any other appellation in Burgundy. Unusually wines from Clos de Beze may simply call themselves Chambertin, which is an indicator of the quality of these vineyards. One of the most complete of all the Grand Crus, rivalling the revered Romanee-Conti, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze wines are the pinnacle of Pinot Noir - fragrant, powerfully complex and intense.
