En Primeur | Pommard

A long popular appellation, Pommard is yet another exclusive red wine area which produces by far the most structured reds of the Côte de Beaune. It extracts rich body and long ageing potential from the limestone/iron-rich clay soil. Some examples can be markedly rustic, yet as time has passed and winemaking know-how has improved, its wines are becoming softer and more approachable when young. We’re limiting purchases to 1 or 2 cases per wine due to high demand. Please contact your account manager or wine@goedhuis.com to discuss larger quantities.

An elegant, pure and ripe nose reflects notes of cassis, poached plum, newly turned earth and a hint of allspice. Much like the Santenots, there is excellent volume and mid-palate concentration to the delineated and overtly mineral-driven flavors that exhibit fine complexity on the youthfully austere and mildly warm finale. This lovely effort is also reasonably firm and should age very well if perhaps not to the same extent as the Santenots. Outstanding. Drink 2030+

A cool, restrained and equally elegant nose is overtly floral with its ripe aromas of dark berry liqueur, earth and pretty spice elements. The venerable old vines are very much in evidence thanks to the seemingly endless reserves of sappy dry extract that confer a highly seductive texture in addition to buffering the exceptionally firm, compact and tightly wound bitter pit fruit-inflected finale that just goes on and on. This superb effort is consistently Rossignol's finest wine and so it is again in 2020. If you can find it, buy it though note well that it is likely to mature glacially. Don't miss! Outstanding. It is always fascinating to taste this wine from cask. Paul splits the Clos into two separate cuvées for vinification, ageing the young and old vines separately, completing the blending just ahead of bottling. Tasting separately shows the individual strengths and then afterwards he shows an approximate blend indicating the wine’s true colours. Deep, dark black cherry in colour, there are distinctive rich dark autumnal fruits. Very broad and intense with firm tannic structure, tremendous poise and fabulous length. An absolute masterclass in quality and terroir.

Discreet but not invisible wood influence can be found on the ripe aromas of various dark berries, prominent earth and violet scents. Somewhat surprisingly in the context of the reported yields, the mid-palate is not especially dense though I very much like the beguiling texture that is at once caressing yet powerful before culminating in a precise, serious and equally austere if notably longer finale. This is an opulent and refined Clos des Epeneaux. Sweet spot. Outstanding. Drink 2030+

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 90-94

I tasted first the cuvée from young vines, which did get rather overtaken by the summer conditions, and then the old vines which showed as a brighter wine, in sharper definition. What matters, of course, is the blend. This shows as having a deep dense purple colour, while the bouquet is almost stunned into submission by the power of the wine. There is a huge wealth of dark fruit, as black as it is red. Supercharged on the palate but finishes with a little crunch as good acidity plays alongside the tannins. The Clos des Epeneaux 2020 is still an atypically massive wine but this could well emerge as a quality player with time. 14.5%
