En Primeur | Domaine Rapet

Domaine Rapet, founded in 1765, boasts 20 hectares of some of the finest vineyards in the northern end of the Côte de Beaune. They have 21 different cuvées from 5 different villages around the town of Beaune, including an enviable two-hectare parcel of Grand Cru Corton Charlemagne. The current incumbent Vincent assumed responsibility for the domaine in 1985 at just 21, so with 35 vintages under his belt, he is very much a senior statesman in the village of Pernand Vergelesses. Whilst not accredited as organic, he follows extremely careful and environmentally respectful practices. The quality of fruit in the vineyard is paramount to the success of this fine estate’s wines. They are not flashy, rather thoughtful in style as Vincent is, and they always have a lovely composure and intensity.

2020 was a generous crop for Vincent’s white wines. He considered the high yields an advantage, as this controlled the level of alcohol and prevented them from rising too high, despite the warm summer days in the run up to harvest. He was concerned about his Pinots, but his earliest harvest ever for the reds, starting on the 17th August, meant he has kept the alcohol levels down and maintained a vibrant freshness. He practiced minimal extraction and careful aeration during fermentation to give purity, rather than power to his 2020s. This is a year where everything has fitted into place at the domaine and was a real highlight of our primeur tastings.

This impressive 1er Cru faces the hillside of Corton Charlemagne. The cool east-facing white marl slope makes it an ideal site for growing Chardonnay, particularly in a warmer vintage such as 2020. Vincent likes to age this wine in larger 350 litre barrels to protect its pure fruit character. With aromas of pear and white fruits, this is very perfumed and floral in nature. It has a great zest of freshness and long controlled finish.

A lovely clean lemon and lime colour, quite racy with a bit of bacon fat, punchy behind, some flesh, ripe citrus alongside the white fruit, wears its concentration lightly and is pleasingly long. Excellent finish.

The core of Vincent’s Corton Charlemagne comes from the most central location of the hillside. His vineyards are of mixed age, 30% of vines under 30 years old, 30% from 30-year-old vines and 40% from vines between 40-60 years old. This proves a perfect combination. Lemon yellow in colour, with generous ripe fruit, and flavours of apricot and nectarine. Whilst rich it is not in excess; the nutty undertones and light acidity keep everything in check. This is a superb Grand Cru.

Fine bright lemon and lime colour. The nose is rather toastier, doubtless the barrel speaking, but in an attractive form. A faint reduction. An excellent solid volume here, with density and the vivacious stones which it should have. All the component parts are there in classical balance and this 2020 Corton-Charlemagne is properly persistent.

Striking purple colour, with a flamboyant nose of spice and blackberry crumble. This is a very composed example of Pinot Noir; it has an earthy structure and darker red fruit flavours of loganberry and a touch of blueberry. Bright and pure, with a gentle sweet fruit finish.

This is a bright, accurate and non-nonsense Beaune, and it literally does what it says on the tin. Smooth, pure, clean and cherry-like, this is a lovely wine, and it will please all-comers.

Glowing red in colour. This has noticeably more stuffing than the Clos du Roi and though the raspberry has a luxurious, indeed lush quality, it is not at all cooked and it works very well. The structure behind, tannins, have ripened properly, this is a fine example.

Rapet’s Corton comes from 2 different parcels on the Aloxe Corton side of the hill. The vines here are planted on red iron soil providing substance and backbone to the naturally harmonious style of wine for which Vincent strives. This is a glorious cuvée, bright scarlet in colour, with a mass of damson and wild fruit, and touch of fruit compote. The graceful volume is in unison with the ripe textured tannins. Superb length and very layered.

Deeper in purple but also definitely fresher both in colour and on the nose. This is delicious, really well poised, little alpine strawberries and fresh raspberries, just a touch of acidity, much less in the way of tannins. Medium plus persistence, the sort of Corton which if only it has originally not been classified as grand cru we would have a much greater reverence for.
