En Primeur | Domaine Jean-Marc Boillot
Bearing the name of founder Jean-Marc, this domaine is now managed by his daughter Lydie and husband François. This outstanding estate owes its origin to an inheritance from Jean-Marc’s grandfather, Etienne Sauzet. Jean-Marc learnt his trade as the Sauzet winemaker before setting up his own 11-hectare domaine with some of the finest vineyards in the Côte de Beaune. More recently they have purchased a further 10 hectares in the Mâconnais. Their vinification process is designed to express the purity of Puligny fruit: a short cold settling of 24 hours follows pressing, followed by 11 months élevage with a weekly bâtonnage before bottling.

Pale in colour and fresher on the nose, with less flesh than the Mâcon Villages. An attractive lemon note on top of some greengage fruit, medium bodied, good length, a precise clean finish. Drink from 2024-2026.

Pale lemon colour. The nose is attractive, a stylish rather than a blowsy type of Mâcon. Vigorous up front, quite a thick texture, a little bit on the fatter side by the finish. Enjoy in its youth. Drink from 2024-2025.

A faint lemon touch to the colour. The bouquet is very reticent, before, unexpectedly, the palate delivers a softer wine with some sucrosity. Just a little bit soft to finish, so accessible now, but my palate gives the edge to les Busserettes. Drink from 2024-2026.

Generous and expressive, combining a soft creamy texture with characters of cracked hazelnut and vanilla fudge. Not overly powerful, but rather medium in weight, it is a fine reflection of village level quality, approachable for easy youthful drinking.

If there is one standout, ultra-reliable Puligny producer to put on a pedestal next to Sauzet, I would pick this one! And I wonder if splashing out on the Premiers Crus in 2022 might be a mistake. Of course, the wines are impressive, but they are uncommonly forward, and I like to think that the big wines need some time in the cellar to reveal their hidden qualities. This is not something I would recommend in 2022, and because the village wines are a little more forward than usual, and the best look impressive, I think that the wise money should invest in hedonism as opposed to longevity and, therefore, J-M Boillot’s wine was a must-buy in 2022.

Jasper Morris MW, October 2023, Score: 91
Pale colour with a light green tint. A little smoky touch to the bouquet along with a fresh greengage bouquet, good intensity on the palate, a proper backbone, an immaculate Puligny of medium intensity. Drink from 2027-2032.
2022 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne Jean-Marc Boillot
£360.00 In Bond-
Goedhuis, December 2023
The highest of Puligny’s Premiers Crus, La Garenne sits below the treeline overlooking the village. Straw yellow colour, there is a refined delicacy and purity to this lovely wine. The floral nature of the nose sits comfortably alongside the delicate flavours of panna cotta and fresh lime. Gentle and surprisingly long on the finish. Lovely!

Welcome back to La Garenne, having been frosted out in 2021. Still a small crop, old vines on a poor soil. Mid lemon and lime. The fruit has an attractive balanced ripeness, an even flow across the palate, some ripe lemon touches, a pleasingly graceful texture, and medium length. Drink from 2028-2034.
2022 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts Jean-Marc Boillot
£395.00 In Bond £493.24 Inc VAT (£82.20 Per Bottle)-
Goedhuis, December 2023
A lower lying Premier Cru in Puligny with a combination of clay and rocky, stony soils. This wine is always bold, complex, and long, and is a hugely sought after amongst the growers in the village. Satsuma and Seville orange peel open out from the glass, starting out floral and generous, ahead of the terroir depth and tension on the palate, giving vigour and a Premier Cru worthy self-confidence.

Jasper Morris MW, October 2023, Score: 93
Pale lemon and lime. The 20222 Les Referts has notably more density than the Garenne, a touch of salt on the citrus at the back of the palate, with generous yellow plum fruit in between. Good length. Drink from 2028-2035.
2022 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Canet Jean-Marc Boillot
£395.00 In Bond £493.24 Inc VAT (£82.20 Per Bottle)-
Goedhuis, December 2023
There is always a touch of buttery ostentation to this cuvée reflecting the more flamboyant nature of its neighbouring village, Meursault. Beguiling aromas of tropical fruit are supported by notes of warm toffee and Crunchy Nut Cornflake. On the palate this is kept in shape by a central line of minerality, but the flavours of mango and lychee give this wine so much appeal, and there is no shortage of depth to allow for a good aging period.

Jasper Morris MW, October 2023, Score: 94
Pale lemon in colour. A very stylish nose, more elegance than the Referts, and a little fuller in body than La Garenne. The Champ Canet manages to be both floral and with an ideal ripeness of fruit on the nose, pure white orchard fruit across the palate, and backed by well-judged oak in the usual Jean-Marc Boillot vanilla style. Good clean acidity to finish, properly persistence. Drink from 2029-2035.
2022 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes Jean-Marc Boillot
£450.00 In Bond-
Goedhuis, December 2023
One of Puligny’s senior Premiers Crus, this is a wonderful example of its quality, balancing subtlety with generosity. Harmonious and poised, this cuvée is redolent of freshly squeezed citrus fruits, upheld by flavours of warm toffee and clotted cream. A taut intensity at the back of the palate gives further depth, and the lift of minerality gives energy and distinction on the finish.
-
Jasper Morris MW, October 2023, Score: 94
Pale in colour, with a particularly attractive nose, discreet but with a fine balance between summer flowers and ripe apples. Not over demonstrative on the palate, but the fruit fills out the palate with complex nuances in the orchard fruit profile, and exceptional length. Drink from 2029-2037.
2022 Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru Jean-Marc Boillot
£925.00 In Bond £1,119.61 Inc VAT (£373.20 Per Bottle)-
Goedhuis, December 2023
Whilst Bâtard-Montrachet has the same substructure as its neighbour Le Montrachet, it has a greater proportion of topsoil. The impact is to produce a flamboyant, powerful and generous Grand Cru. Domaine Jean Marc Boillot has just under 1/5th of a hectare, so this wine is a real rarity and saved for bottling rather than being offered to taste at the domaine. When available, it is always an absolute gem. (Not Tasted)

A pale colour with a lime tint. Backward but powerful, as it should be. Taking time to build on the palate, with a mineral thread of acidity, pure white fruit, expertly poised. There may be weightier examples around, but this is certainly very fine. Drink from 2030-2040.
