    Deep opaque colour, this is a wine full of dark cherry and autumnal fruits. Very lively and fresh, it balances compact and intense fruit muscle with a brightness. There’s plenty of joy and life in this concentrated and impressive cuvée.

    There is a touch of the sauvage to the ripe aromas of black cherry, cassis, violet and earth. The decidedly fleshy full-bodied flavors possess good power and mid-palate density while displaying very good energy on the firmly structured, serious markedly rustic finale. This is an old school Corton that is clearly built-to-age. Drink: 2033+

    The 2018 Corton Grand Cru Cuvée du Bourdon is the usual blend of some 60% Les Paulands, 20% Les Perrières and 20% Clos du Roi, and Alexandre Abel told me that he limited the fermentation temperature to a maximum of 30 degrees Celsius to control extraction. Wafting from the glass with notions of cherries, raspberries, potpourri, spices and forest floor, it's medium to full-bodied, lively and concentrated, with real energy and excellent structural refinement.

    Alexandre Abel co-ferments grapes from the climats of (mostly) Pollands with 20% each of Perrières and Clos du Roi to produce this stylish, nuanced, well-integrated cuvée of Corton. Fine, nuanced and refined, it's a Grand Cru red that whispers rather than shouts with understated wood and savoury floral red berry fruit. The tannins are a delight.

Furthermore, they are not afraid to experiment, and are always evolving the viticulture and winemaking style with small innovations. The estate has eschewed the fashion of using new oak barrels to age the wines, preferring seasoned casks which act as an “elevage” vessel rather than imparting barrel flavours. Corton

The Grands Crus of Corton, a red made from Pinot Noir, and Corton Charlemagne, a white made from Chardonnay are shared between Aloxe-Corton, Ladoix Serrigny and Pernand Vergelesses. The vines for both are planted on the hillsides underneath the plateau of Corton's woodland forest. The majorityof Pinot Noir is planted in the southern and eastern sector where the soil is naturally rich with red iron clay giving additional body and power. Overall, the wines from these areas tend to be fruit forward and fleshy with a balance of round edges and fine concentration.
