  • Goedhuis, December 2019

With only 20% new oak, this has a nose packed with clear, pure fragrant pomegranates. A little weightier, this will require a bit more patience than the straight Auxey. Well-structured, with attractive notes of mocha and spice on the finish.

  • Neal Martin, January 2020, Score: 90-92

The 2018 Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru is a blend of two parcels, Les Bréterins (limestone soils) and, further down in the village, Les Duresses (deep clayey soils). This has a very cohesive bouquet of raspberry preserve, cranberry and pressed rose petal aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins, a superb line of acidity and impressive structure on the finish. This is clearly a step up from the 2017 Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru and comes recommended. 2024 - 2038

  • Burghound, April 2020, Score: 90

A slightly riper and more deeply pitched nose offers up notes of poached plum, dark berries and a whiff of the sauvage. The medium-bodied flavors are also sleek and appealingly well-delineated while exuding a subtle salinity on the youthfully austere and ever-so-mildly rustic finish that also exhibits a touch of bitter fruit character. Outstanding top value. Drink 2026+

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2020, Score: 87-90

Just racked. Some of the vines are younger here and yielded generously. The colour is nonetheless a dense black purple. The bouquet is less immediately stunning than that of the village Auxey. On the other hand there is more texture of rich dark fruit throughout.

Clos des Épeneaux is Pommard’s most celebrated climat. The 5.23 hectare monopole has been in the Comte Armand family since 1828. Paul Zinetti took over from Benjamin Leroux as régisseur in 2014, and is rising to every challenge at this small, characterful domaine. They also have small holdings in Volnay and Auxey Duresses and, while these wines have the distinctive character of quintessential Côte de Beaune, they are also some of the most sophisticated, nuanced expressions you might taste across these villages. An understated use of new oak matches the textured fruit, and gentle handling in combination with intuitive biodynamic practices afford these wines both strength and delicacy. The domaine has begun to noticeably outpace its neighbours and redefine how the finest terroir of Pommard is capable of not only power but elegance as well.Read less

Region

Auxey Duresses

Auxey Duresses is a lesser known appellation of 107 hectares located in the eastern hills above Meursault. Its slightly cooler climate with mostly north facing slopes enable its wines to be particularly crisp, fresh and occasionally austere in less warm vintages. Though three-quarters of its production is white, there are a handful of growers who produce reds. Due to its more modest status, its wines tend to provide excellent value for money . They are well worth seeking out particularly in warmer vintages.
