Elio Grasso | New Vintage Releases

The Elio Grasso estate possesses some of the best situated vineyards in Montefore D'Alba. Today, we are delighted to offer a fabulous new set of vintage releases from these truly first-class sites. Gianluca Grasso's 2018 Barolos possess an incredibly fine structure and some of the silkiest tannins we have ever come across. They reverberate with energy, precision, and finesse. Even though his vineyard plots are just a stone's throw apart from each other, they are stylistically very different due to their unique terroirs. We also have a small parcel of the extremely rare 2021 Chardonnay ‘Educato’.

In 1986 Gianluca’s father Elio, planted a small east facing section of vineyard with Chardonnay and “Educato” was born. Gianluca told us this names means, “brought up well” . Coming from a small plot of 35 year old vines, with a high elevation on chalk and calcareous soils, this is Grasso’s gem. The 2021 is utterly delicious. Fresh stone fruits such as white peach and mineral notes mingle with lemon meringue, chalk, tarragon, lime flower and vanilla pod. There is sweeping breadth on the mid-palate that is tightly controlled by the bright acidity and crystalline, zesty fruit. Incredibly Burgundian while possessing its own Piemontese imprint. The finish has fresh citrus and an irresistible salinity. There is no MLF or batonnage here, just a focus on retaining freshness. It is pure joy in a glass.

As always this vineyard is so feminine and pretty. Red fruited with pure hints of rose petal, pomegranat and balsamic nose. Silky yet grippy, this is a study in elegance and finesse with its fragrant seductive fruit and multi-faceted minerals. This has such delicious fruit on the mid-palate, gorgeous red fruits, rose, spice and some enthralling fresh mint and porcini mushroom aromas that peek through. These are perfectly framed by the caressing tannins.

Intoxicating purity of fruit on the nose, the aromatics are singing, albeit a slightly darker fruited profile that sees raspberry and strawberry meld with blackberry and black cherry. We also love the darker floral aromatics the peep through, of iris and violets. There is a bit more grip and muscle on the palate of the Case Mate thanks to the slick tannins. The Ginestra vineyards showing its signature intensity. It also shows delicious sapidity to complement the rich but pure fruit. We love its sumptuous minty, forest fruit finish. This is brooding, but super-expressive.

  • Antonio Galloni, November 2021, Score: 96

The 2015 Barolo Riserva Rüncot is absolutely gorgeous. That much is clear. The only thing the 2015 needs is time. Time in the glass brings out the wine's inner perfume and bright, red-toned fruit. Blood orange, spice, mint, licorice and dried flowers linger on the persistent, sculpted finish. Readers should not plan on opening a bottle any time soon, as the Rüncot only starts to drink well at around age ten, at a minimum. There is certainly plenty to look forward to. Drink 2025-2040.

  • ML, November 2021, Score: 97

The last time we saw this iconic wine was in 2013 (a vintage that earned a perfect score). Following up on that success, the Elio Grasso 2015 Barolo Riserva Rüncot is a generous, open-knit Nebbiolo that has much of the warmth and sunshine locked deep within its core. The bouquet reveals broad brush aromas of black fruit, blackberry preserves, smoky tar and baked plum. With 7,000 bottles made, this Riserva is smooth and velvety in texture. There's no reason why it can't hold until the mid-century mark. Drink 2024-2050
