    Tasted at the vertical in London, I have instead used the tasting note from a bottle opened at the property when I visited just a couple of weeks later. The 1996 Montrose is a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot picked between 23 September and 6 October. It was served alongside the 1986 Montrose, however, this is a far better wine and reconfirms Robert Parker's remarks at his own vertical at the property in 2014. For me, it is that loamy character that defines the nose—freshly tilled, damp soil that tinctures the black fruit —that takes you straight to this particular château. This is classic through and through and very well defined. The palate is wonderful with very fine delineation, pitch-perfect acidity, touches of graphite infusing the red and black fruit that dovetails into a very pretty, floral finish. This is clearly one of the great wines of the 1996 vintage and I would be stocking up as much as I could, because it will give 30-40 years of pleasure. Tasted July 2016.

    On a hot streak since 1989, Montrose has produced a surprisingly sumptuous, humongous wine in 1996. Four separate tastings provided convincing evidence of just how high the quality is at this estate. According to proprietor J. L. Charmolue, 59% of the crop was used for the 1996 Montrose, a blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, and 4% Cabernet Franc (a slightly higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon than normal). The wine reveals an opaque, thick-textured, purple color, followed by a young, grapy but remarkably sweet, pure nose of black fruits, licorice, and subtle oak. Thrilling levels of extract, glycerin, and fruit pour over the palate with no hard edges. Along with a well-defined, full-bodied personality, this wine offers plenty of tannin, but it is more than compensated for by the huge quantities of fruit. The 1996 Montrose will tighten up over the next 12 months, and will require 7-10 years of cellaring. This is a 30-35 year wine. P.S. The 1996 La Dame de Montrose should be a noteworthy buy when released as it performed extremely well in my tastings (much like the 1990). Drink: 2004-2032.

    This classic Montrose's opaque purple/black color is impressive. The wine possesses exceptionally rich, overripe plum and cassis fruit intermingled with smoke, minerals, and spice. Only 59% of the harvest was included in this blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, and 4% Cabernet Franc. The wine's unctuous texture makes one think there is more Merlot in the blend, but its success is due to the superripe Cabernet Sauvignon. The 1996 is sweet (from ripeness, not sugar) and medium to full-bodied, with a well-delineated personality. No doubt there is significant tannin lurking in the background, but much of it is concealed by the wine's hefty extract, glycerin, and fruit levels. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2030.

    The 1996 Montrose reveals outstanding potential. It boasts a saturated dark ruby/purple color, and aromas of new oak, jammy black currants, smoke, minerals, and new saddle leather. This multi-layered wine is rich and medium to full-bodied, with sweet tannin, a nicely-textured, concentrated mid-palate, and an impressively long finish. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2025.

Region

St Estèphe

St Estèphe is the most northern of Médoc communal crus. Its unique terroir is made up of layers of gravel which are supported by a dense clay base. This subsoil retains water in dry seasons and works particularly well with Merlot, a largely planted variety which is used to flesh out Cabernet Sauvignon. This clay base also creates powerful, textured tannins which enable St Estèphe to stand out from the pack. Like St Julien, it is one of the four most important communal appellations of the Médoc which does not contain any first growths, despite its southern border being a stone'sthrow from Château Lafite. Nonetheless, it is home to some excellent châteaux making fine wines such as Cos d'Estournel, Montrose, Calon Ségur and Lafon Rochet.
