Producer

Château Musar

The Lebanon is one of the oldest wine producing regions in the world and for many years Chateau Musar, established in 1930 by Gaston Hochar, has been universally acknowledged as its top producer. Now in its third generation, the family still runs the estate. Its 180 hectares are organically certified and are situated in the famous Bekaa Valley, cradled between two mountain ranges running parallel to Lebanon’s Mediterranean coastline. Vines have been grown here for over 6,000 years. Warm days and cool nights give the exotic intensity of flavour and a lift of freshness to the fruit. The red blend is made with French grape varieties; Cabernet Sauvignon, which lends the rich black fruit flavours; Rhône grapes, Cinsault and Carignan contribute fragrance and aromatics, violets, pepper, and supple warm spiciness of cedar and cinnamon. Either set of qualities might dominate in a particular vintage, but the style is always emphatically Lebanese: enticingly aromatic, with persistent fruit flavours.
