Anticipation is building for the January release of the Burgundy 2016s. The crop might be small, but the quality is high. One of Beaune’s preeminent producers and land owners, Louis Jadot, always release their prices early, so this year it presents a great opportunity to secure yourself some wines from sought after villages like Chambolle Musigny and Nuits St Georges and grands crus such as Echézeaux that may be sadly scarce come the January release.
Head winemaker, Frédéric Barnier, has described the vintage as one in which the red wines show great “tenderness”. Indeed, they do have a sweet, tender fruit, with fine, supple tannins and an energetic freshness; all elements that are essential components of classical Pinot Noir.
This substantial operation is the union of several different domaines (including Domaine Gagey, Domaine des Héritiers, and Domaine Louis Jadot), making them one of the region’s most significant land owners, plus their traditional négociant arm, Louis Jadot. We have selected a shortlist of Jadot wines from their wider range, focusing on their domaine holdings, if you feel ready to dive in.
Beaune 1er Cru Theurons Louis Jadot Domaine Gagey
£170 per 6 Bottles IB
This vineyard lies at the very bullseye of the Beaune appellation and occupies part of the noteworthy Montagne de Beaune slope. It has a brilliant red cherry colour and a very finely fruited nose with a fresh, chalky palate, lending itself to early drinking enjoyment. Drink 2019 – 2026
Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Ursules Louis Jadot Domaine des Héritiers
£270 per 6 Bottles IB
This monopole is the jewel of the Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot portfolio. It has savoury cool berry fruit with an excellent tension running through the tannins. Impressively well balanced. Drink 2019 – 2027
Morey St Denis 1er Cru Clos des Ormes Louis Jadot
£285 per 6 Bottles IB
Morey St Denis was lucky enough to escape the worst of the frost. This parcel is brilliantly positioned, extending down from Clos de la Roche, near the border with Gevrey Chambertin’s grands crus. The wine has a deep purple colour and intensely perfumed nose of aromatic fruit and savoury spice. The tannins are well integrated with the oak, and the wine has a satisfying length. Excellent value for money. Drink 2020 – 2029
Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots Louis Jadot Domaine Gagey
£345 per 6 Bottles IB
The most northerly of Nuits St Georges’s premiers crus neighbouring Vosne Romanée’s Aux Malconsorts. This 2016 is richer and weightier than the Morey, with a fruit core of black berries and a delicious juicy length. Full-bodied with great complexity, elegance and a smoky finish. Drink 2020 – 2030
Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Les Feussellottes Domaine Louis Jadot
£345 per 6 Bottles IB (limited)
Pale in colour, yet full in flavour. One of the most respected crus in Chambolle, and lucky to escape decimation by the frost that was particularly challenging in Chambolle. There is a density to the fruit content, with a fresh, bright length. It retains the delicacy for which the village is renowned, with the structure of a premier cru. Drink 2019 – 2030
Vosne Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots Louis Jadot
£495 per 6 Bottles IB (very limited)
It’s hard to beat Suchots’ position, wedged between Romanée St Vivant, Richebourg and Echézeaux. The wine combines great richness and elegance. It has a fine balance of velvety fruit and supple tannins. Drink 2020 – 2030
Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St Jacques Domaine Louis Jadot
£675 per 6 Bottles IB (very limited)
Only a tiny amount of this wine is available this year. An elegant nose of crushed red berries and subtle toasted notes from oak ageing are supported by some chalky little tannins that flow across the palate. Drink 2020 – 2030
Echézeaux Grand Cru Louis Jadot Domaine Gagey
£810 per 6 Bottles IB (very limited)
Echézeaux suffered a grave blow from the April frost, so precious little has been produced. This has charming aromatics of cherries and spice with a powerful yet elegant length. Drink 2020 – 2030
Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru Domaine Louis Jadot
£850 per 6 Bottles IB (limited)
A real highlight of the Jadot tasting, it has a pure perfume of crushed raspberries, cranberries and smoke. It is exquisitely Pinot, with its soft, elegant freshness and gentle tannins. Drink 2020 – 2032
Our full En Primeur offer will be out in January, but we are able to offer Jadot’s terrific 2016s early. We will be offering some other Burgundy 2016 pre-releases in the run up to Christmas, particularly focusing on whites.
