  • Goedhuis, December 2019

A blend of three different locations within the Montée de Tonnerre appellation from vines averaging 83 years of age. The 2018 is scented with white peach and jasmine and is full of class and confidence. With linear precision and controlled persistence, this rewards with a cornucopia of flavours on the finish. Beautifully complete.

  • Antonio Galloni, January 2020, Score: 92-94

The 2018 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru is precise and nuanced, with all of the energy that is such a signature of this site. Lemon peel, white flowers, mint and crushed rocks all run through a finely cut Chablis that offers terrific nuance as well as class. This is one of the highlights in the range.

  • Burghound, October 2019, Score: 90-93

Along with the Blanchots, this is the most floral-suffused wine in the range with its aromas of white peach and discreet Chablis elements that are trimmed in just enough wood to comment upon. The succulent but impressively intense middle weight flavors are somewhat less generous but even finer while exhibiting very fine length on the bone dry finale. This too is potentially excellent and worth considering. Sweet spot. Outstanding. Drink: 2025+

  • Jasper Morris MW, December 2019, Score: 91-94

There is a light yellow touch to the colour. The nose is quite backward at this stage. There is however a significant volume of full on yellow plum fruit in the mouth, with some tannins behind, though the wine has not seen any barrels yet. It is a little more viscous in texture than Mont de Milieu with significant dry extract, a powerful wine which should age well.

The Billaud-Simon name is long-established in Chablis, dating back to 1815 when Charles-Louis-Noël Billaud purchased his first vineyards. The estate remained in family ownership for 200 years until Erwan Faiveley purchased Billaud-Simon for Joseph Faiveley in 2015. This represents a new era for the Faiveley family, one of the Côte d’Or’s most significant vineyard owners, now investing their expertise and commitment to producing great wines in the Yonne and Chablis with approximately 18 hectares of exceptional vineyard holdings including four premiers crus and four grands crus. Under the guidance of Wine Director Olivier Bailly, they remain respectful to the traditions of the estate and continue to sell the wines under the Billaud-Simon name. The style is graceful and pure. Olivier seeks to make wines with true appellational authenticity. Oak is kept to minimal levels, only used judiciously, allowing the natural fruit content to express itself to a maximum.Read less

Region

Chablis

Chablis is world famous for its fine white wines produced from the Chardonnay grape. The best vineyards are perched above the winding Serein river and are south or southwest facing ensuring better ripeness in this cooler climate. It has four appellation levels. Petit Chablis is the most modest and simple followed by Chablis, which is the largest and most prominent. Premier cru Chablis is the third largest appellation and encompasses almost 40 different climats or vineyards including the famed Montée de Tonnerre, Fourchaumes and Mont de Milieu. The most noble of all Chablis are the grand crus of which there are 7 climats in total Bougros, Les Preuses, Vaudésir, Grenouilles, Valmur, Les Clos and Blanchot. The wines of Chablis have remained some of the best value in the world, particularly their superb grand crus which can easily cost 50% less than its closest revered white grand cru neighbour, Corton Charlemagne.
