Goedhuis, December 2015
Named after the prior of Cluny, this fine 1er Cru sits just below Mazis Chambertin. This is a broad and full style of Gevrey, with sweet blackberry flavours, hints of cocoa and an appealing touch of rustic structure on the finish. A wine clearly showing the more masculine nature that one expects from this appellation.

Neal Martin, December 2015, Score: 86-88
The 2014 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Prieur has a little more complexity than the Au Closeau. Here the fruit is a touch darker with a subtle marine influence, a couple of oyster shells mixed in with the black fruit. The palate is quite sharp and citric on the entry. There is a surfeit of energy here and very good tension. I wonder if that acidity is dialed up just a little too high on the finish? I appreciate the tension here but it just feels a little "uncontrolled" on the finish. Drink 2017-2027

Burghound, January 2016, Score: 89-91
Moderate reduction is enough to block an evaluation of the softly oaky nose. There is by contrast good freshness to the intense and muscular but refined medium-bodied flavors that deliver good if not truly special depth on the gently oaky and firm finish. Drink 2022+

This substantial Gevrey Chambertin domaine is under the guardianship of a collaborative family team: parents Christine and Philippe, and children Caroline and Nicolas. They have an embarrassment of riches within their armoury of four 1ers Crus and six exceptional Grands Crus, culminating with plots of both Clos de Bèze and Le Musigny. They also boast one of the finest two storey cellars in the Côte d’Or, built by members of the Prussian military on their way back from the Hundred Years War, with ideal conditions maintaining perfect temperatures for Philippe’s preferred two-year élevage in cask. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.Read less

Gevrey Chambertin
The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
