Dense dark opaque colour, it has aromas of blackberry and blackcurrant fruits with a hint of roasted almonds. A full and ripe style without excess, the tannins are polished and subtle, this is as beautifully complete an example of Pauillac as one could want. Weighted, structured and stunningly pure dark fruits. Delicious.
Grand Puy Lacoste has been one of Goedhuis' favourites for quite some time as it always delivers.This is true again in 2009. Opening up with a pretty nose of violet, blackberry and plum, on the palate it further expands with velvety chocolate, sweet red cherries and roasted coffee. Lots of layers yet with incredible poise.
Performing better from bottle than it did from cask (and comparable to their wines 2005, 2000, 1990 and 1982), this is a great classic from Xavier Borie’s estate situated on the back roads west of the town of Pauillac. Its dense ruby/purple color is followed by hints of spring flowers, crushed rocks, black currants, cedar and earth/underbrush. Precise and elegant as well as backward and foreboding, it should put on weight in the bottle and evolve for two decades. Very concentrated as well as velvety-textured, it is a beauty of finesse, balance, purity and nobility. It will benefit from 5-7 more years of bottle age.
I was surprised that this wine was not more concentrated given the overall character of the vintage, and I would rate it behind the 2005, 2000, 1990, and 1982. Nevertheless, it boasts this estate's classic creme de cassis character as well as a soft, round, medium to full-bodiedmouthfeel, pure fruit, and silky tannins, but not the weight, depth, or profound concentration of the top 2009 Pauillacs. Still, this cuvee will be approachable young, and should evolve easily for two decades. Drink: 2010 - 2030
70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc. Modern, smoky fruit. Plenty of ripeness. Very young structure, and certainly has the concentration to last. Serious stuff. (RH) Score 17/20 Drink Dates 2019-2034

From 50ha of vines in a single block of gravelly soils, this gives concentrated cassis and blackberry aromatics on the nose, with the juiciness providing interest all the way through the palate. I love this for its Pauillac-ness, and it's so mouthwatering that you have barely finished one sip before you want another. Lovely quality, perhaps not as perfectly balanced as the 2005, but just as satisfying. It's one of the best 2009s in the lineup that's not exorbitantly priced. Drink 2020-2038
Black red, big, smoky, almost leathery fruit, really great purity and intensity of flavour and great freshness and depth, with the tannins perfectly absorbed. Drink 2016-35.
Grand Puy Lacoste sits on top of one of the steepest slopes in Pauillac, a whole 16 metres above the main flatlands! Hardly Himalayan, but the extra 16 metres of pebble-enriched soil results inparticularly excellent drainage. François-Xavier Borie is at the helm of this very impressive château which was purchased in 1978 from Monsieur Dupin.
Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
