Ardberg
Though Ardbeg was officially founded in 1815, rumour has it illicit distilling had already been taking place on the site for more than 20 years. Fast forward to the 1970s, and Ardbeg were victims of the global whisky downturn. Battered and bruised, they barely managed to produce a rivulet of new make spirit each year and were on the brink of being torn down until Glenmorangie’s purchase in 1997. A year later, Ardbeg were awarded Distillery of the Year and haven’t looked back since. Like its Islay cousins, Ardbeg is heavily peated with smoke, sea spray, and exuberant fruit predominant in most expressions. The core range of five single malts embodies the distillery’s smoke-soaked essence, while limited releases are the epitome of whisky-making and often disappear as soon as offered.Region
Islay
Known as ‘The Queen of the Hebrides’, Islay has long been the reigning monarch of smoke-filled single malt whisky. Indeed, many historians even believe that Scotch whisky was born on the island, with distillation arriving from Ireland via Islay in the 13th century. Despite its size, this small island is jam-packed with a number of legendary distilleries, such as Ardbeg, Laphroaig, and Lagavulin to name a few. Often described as smoky, briny, and medicinal, Islay takes its characteristic flavours from the peat fuel used during the malting stage of production.
