Neal Martin, April 2023, Score: 92-94
The 2022 Le Petit Mouton has an intense bouquet with violet infused cassis and blackberry fruit, just a faint touch of Medjool dates in the background. It opens extremely confidently in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins. Structured, granular in texture and multi-layered, it's quite difficult to recognize this as a mere Deuxieme Vin. Long on the aftertaste, this is an outstanding Le Petit Mouton. Drink 2028-2054

Wine Advocate, April 2023, Score: 92-94
Representing some 29% of the estate's production this year, the 2022 Le Petit Mouton shares much of the character of the grand vin, offering up a rich bouquet of cassis, dark berries, espresso roast and cigar wrapper, followed by a medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered palate that's fleshy and concentrated, with powdery tannins and an expansive finish.

Antonio Galloni, April 2023, Score: 91-93
The 2022 Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild is laced with sumptuous red-toned fruit, pomegranate, mint, blood orange and rose petal. Silky tannins wrap it all together in style. Le Petit Mouton captures the exotic side of the year nicely and yet retains terrific energy throughout. Drink 2028-2042.

Goedhuis, May 2023, Score: 93-95
A contender for second wine of the vintage, the aromatics on this are top of the class! Floral scents of orange blossom lift from the glass, with bright red berry fruit notes underpinned by walnut hints from the oak. Already difficult to resist, the palate is supple and silky, cut through with fine acidity and firm integrated tannins.

James Suckling, April 2023, Score: 95-96
The Petit Mouton is more and more structured and intense. It's made for the cellar. Full to medium body. Lively and intense. Solid. 71% cabernet sauvignon, 19% merlot, 7% cabernet franc, and 3% petit verdot.

Jeb Dunnuck, April 2023, Score: 94-96
Tasting more like a Grand Vin than a second wine, the 2022 Le Petit Mouton De Mouton Rothschild boasts a deep purple hue to go with full-bodied aromas and flavors of cassis, ripe blackberries, melted chocolate, espresso, and graphite. Rich, opulent, and still balanced, drink this sexy 2022 any time over the coming 15-20 years. The blend of the 2022 is 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot that's still resting in 60% new barrels.

Matthew Jukes, April 2023, Score: 18.5+
I have never tasted a nobler Le Petit Mouton. I was fortunate to be given a look at the vineyard maps showing which plots went into the Grand Vin and which were used for Le Petit Mouton over the last few vintages. It is clear that distinct plots always end up in the Grand Vin, but others flip between being used for Mouton and Le Petit Mouton and in 2022, I am confident that the vast majority of the fruit in this wine was of sufficient quality to have been upgraded! Every block is pushed as high as possible at Mouton, and then, at harvest time, they decide on their potential, and the plots diverge at this point, so they work on the blends. From what I have seen and tasted, this is as genuine a second wine as it gets, with sensational class and epic breeding. Given that I have awarded a perfect score to 2022 Mouton, it will not surprise you to read that this wine gains my highest score for Le Petit Mouton. It goes without saying, but this is sheer class.

Mouton Rothschild is the only wine to have been elevated to First Growth status since the original classification of the Medoc in 1855. The exceptional success and status of Chateau Mouton Rothschild can largely be attributed to one man: Baron Philippe de Rothschild. He recognised the extraordinary potential of the estate and devoted his life to ensuring that potential was realised. His work is now carried on by his charismatic daughter Baroness Philippine, ably assisted by Herve Berland. This most flamboyant and glamorous estate is famous for its artistic connections, embodied in the grand vins's label, redesigned each year by such legends as Picasso, Miro and Warhol. It is also renowned for its impeccably maintained visitor-friendly estate, but its impressive and well-deserved reputation is based above all on the opulence and excellence of its wines.Read less
Region
Pauillac
Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
