    The fruit for this high-class Grand Cru comes from four sources; two by Ladoix with a high clay content, and two in Aloxe Corton which boast a little more limestone. This is a confident wine, showing off its Grand Cru pedigree. Fresh strawberry jam and menthol scent, ample and deliciously full in the palate with an excellent harmony of rounded tannins. The life and energy from the limestone buoys up the finish perfectly.

    The 2022 Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru comes from 1.5 hectares split over four parcels on different terroirs: two parcels in a former quarry with shallow soils in Aloxe-Corton and two from rich deep and ferrous soils towards Ladoix. The refined bouquet opens gradually in the glass: dark berry fruit, pressed iris flower, girolles and a touch of licorice. The medium-bodied palate has very fine tannins. It’s gentle and caressing in the mouth, gradually building towards a disarmingly pure finish, a touch of white pepper on the aftertaste. Wonderful. Drinking Window: 2027-2045.

    Unfurling in the glass with aromas of red berries, orange zest, rose petals and sweet spices, the 2022 Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru is full-bodied, fleshy and ample, with a sweet, layered core of fruit framed by supple, powdery tannins. Rich but lively, it concludes with a long and expansive finish. The blue marls of this terroir seem to have held up well in the heat.

    Four plots, two on the Aloxe side where the limestone is close to the surface, and two on richer, deeper soil towards Ladoix. A rich powerful purple, unracked. Little wild berries. This is perfectly balanced in every dimension. It has tasted well since the beginning says Claude, and I certainly think so on today's showing. A really fine finish with a plumpness to the fruit and a fine fresh feel. Top Corton! Drink from 2030-2038.

Domaine Chandon de Briailles

The sibling team at this stunning domaine (Francois and Claude de Nicolay) is most definitely a winning one. Their biggest influence has been to convert the estate firstly to organic and now to biodynamic methods of viticulture and vinification. The wines focus on sensual flavours and refinement, these are not powerful, but the aged vines allow for wines of extraordinary texture and complexity.

Region

Corton

The Grands Crus of Corton, a red made from Pinot Noir, and Corton Charlemagne, a white made from Chardonnay are shared between Aloxe-Corton, Ladoix Serrigny and Pernand Vergelesses. The vines for both are planted on the hillsides underneath the plateau of Corton's woodland forest. The majorityof Pinot Noir is planted in the southern and eastern sector where the soil is naturally rich with red iron clay giving additional body and power. Overall, the wines from these areas tend to be fruit forward and fleshy with a balance of round edges and fine concentration.
