  • Neal Martin, April 2023, Score: 92-94

The 2022 Haut-Brion Blanc has a well-defined bouquet with fresh Anjou pear, white peach and orange pith scents - excellent definition and focus. The palate is well balanced with a waxy texture, light tropical notes and stem ginger hints toward the lively finish. This is an excellent Haut Brion Blanc, though it doesn't fully match the caliber of its most outstanding vintages. Drink 2028-2050

  • Wine Advocate, April 2023, Score: 93-95

Delivering aromas of peach, sweet orchard fruit, spring flowers and lemon oil, the 2022 Haut-Brion Blanc is a full-bodied wine with a seamless, enveloping profile. Its glossy, textural mid-palate that segues into a sappy, racy finish of crystalline purity. A blend of 51.4% Sémillon and 48.6% Sauvignon Blanc, this wine is fatter and fleshier than the more tensile La Mission Haut-Brion and will in all likelihood offer a broader drinking window.

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2023, Score: 94-96

The 2022 Haut-Brion Blanc is fabulous. Rich, explosive and dramatic, the 2022 is stunning right out of the glass. Soft curves wrap around a core of lemon confit, marzipan, chamomile, dried flowers and mint. The 2022 is a serious white that will blossom beautifully with time. It is wonderfully impressive in this tasting. Drink 2028-2042.

  • Goedhuis, April 2023, Score: 96-98

A touch more Sémillon in the blend than Sauvignon Blanc this vintage makes for a serious impression at this stage. Toasted honey, freshly cut hay and kaffir lime notes all unfold from the glass. That hallmark 2022 freshness jumps out on the palate, with a zippy entry that’s fresh and lifted. It’s singing and so vibrant, with sweet and golden lime juice flavours. It’s generous with everything in balance. Difficult to resist even now.

  • James Suckling, April 2023, Score: 98-99

Dried lemon and lime with honeysuckle and stone aromas, that follow through to a full body with fantastic length and energy at the end. Phenolics give it great length and stature. 51.4% semillon and 48.6% sauvignon blanc.

  • Jeb Dunnuck, April 2023, Score: 95-97

The 2022 Château Haut-Brion Blanc is close to an even split of Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc, but it seems to lead with its Sauvignon at this point and has bright citrus, lime pith, honeyed flower, and obvious chalky minerality on both the nose and palate. Medium to full-bodied and beautifully balanced, with notable concentration as well as acidity, it's another brilliant wine from this team.

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2023, Score: 19+

This is an awe-inspiring wine with incredible impact and grandeur, and even though the new oak steps over the 40% mark, I cannot see it in this wine because the fruit is so radiant. Layers and layers of citrus meet mint, almond, pineapple and green tea, and the buoyancy and gravitas are jawdropping. I would go so far as to say that there is red-wine-like intensity here, and even a sensation of skin tannin brings riveting traction to the finish. The scale of flavour is second to none, making it akin to a Grand Cru Burgundy in terms of density and nobility.

Situated in Pessac-Léognan in Graves, the estate is the only classified growth located outside the Médoc. Château Haut Brion has the most Merlot and the most Cabernet Franc of any of the First Growths and the second wine is Le Clarence de Haut-Brion, known as Ch Bahans Haut Brion prior to 2007.Read less

Region

Pessac-Léognan

Stretching from the rather unglamorous southern suburbs of Bordeaux, for 50 km along the left bank of the river Garonne, lies Graves. Named for its gravelly soil, a relic of Ice Age glaciers, this is the birthplace of claret, despatched from the Middle Ages onwards from the nearby quayside to England in vast quantities. It can feel as though Bordeaux is just about red wines, but some sensational white wines are produced in this area from a blend of sauvignon blanc, Semillon and, occasionally, muscadelle grapes, often fermented and aged in barrel. In particular, Domaine de Chevalier is renowned for its superbly complex whites, which continue to develop in bottle over decades. A premium appellation, Pessac-Leognan, was created in 1987 for the most prestigious terroirs within Graves. These are soils with exceptional drainage, made up of gravel terraces built up in layers over many millennia, and consequently thrive in mediocre vintages but are less likely to perform well in hotter years. These wines were appraised and graded in their own classification system in 1953 and updated in 1959, but, like the 1855 classification system, this should be regarded with caution and the wines must absolutely be assessed on their own current merits.
