  • Goedhuis, December 2022

Unsurprisingly for a vineyard that sits between Romanée St Vivant, Echézeaux and Richebourg, this Premier Cru is highly esteemed. This is a Vosne Romanée that possesses muscle, although in 2021 with the cooler conditions and longer ripening it is a more graceful style than some years. Pretty red cherry scent, cardamon and coffee bean. The sense of power sits beneath the wine. At this stage it focuses more on its floral intent and beautiful flavour profile. It has so much potential.

  • Neal Martin, January 2023, Score: 92-94

The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru is quite backward on the nose, maybe just missing a little joie-de-vivre at the moment, a bit "sulky" compared to other crus from the Domaine. The palate is much more expressive: edgy red berry fruit, a lovely touch of white pepper and thyme, in fact, you could imagine there being 10-20% stems when in fact, there are none. Persistent on the finish, this Suchots seems to be intending on biding its time. Drink 2024-2042.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2022, Score: 91-94

A little deeper in crimson colouring, and certainly the cleanest bouquet to date. This is lively, a little orange blossom in with cherry and strawberry notes, middleweight but with persistence, this will make an attractive Suchots for the medium term. Drink from 2027-2033.

Producer

Domaine de l'Arlot

Domaine de l'Arlot was created in 1987 when AXA Millésimes purchased the property in Prémeaux, just south of Nuits St Georges. Its history as a domaine, however, stretches back far into the Burgundian annals passing through the Vienot and Belin dynasties before AXA’s acquisition. The domaine’s recent history has been shaped by the influence of Jean-Pierre de Smet who ran the domaine for almost two decades before Christian Seely took over direction. In 2014 Christian installed Géraldine Godot as technical manager and winemaker. A native Burgundian, she is a qualified microbiologist and oenologist, and looks set for a bright future at this Côte de Nuits estate. The domaine favours whole bunch fermentation, seeking to produce wines with refinement and finesse. (Not to be confused with Domaine Arlaud in Morey St Denis.)

Region

Vosne Romanée

The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
