  • Goedhuis, December 2022

The fruit for this high-class Grand Cru comes from four sources, two by Ladoix with a high clay content, and two in Aloxe Corton which boast a little more limestone. Smoky wild berry scent, liquorice and blueberry. There is a firm tension within this wine, showing the importance of the proportion of clay in the soil. Hugely layered, very much a baby but the potential is huge. This is a sensationally classy wine from the hill of Corton.

  • Neal Martin, January 2023, Score: 93-95

From four parcels comprising 1.5-hectares, the 2021 Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru has a harmonious bouquet with dark plum, licorice and hints of menthol. This blossoms in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins framing the dusky, black fruit laced with white pepper, thyme and bay leaf. Very persistent, this is an excellent Corton-Bressandes. Drink 2025-2045.

  • Jasper Morris MW, December 2022, Score: 91-94

Crimson purple, with some oak on the nose, more in red fruit, and less evident whole bunch. A rising sense of balance as we go up the scale, and also a proper crop. Raspberry and alpine strawberry, a little black pepper touch before the more typical white pepper notes, the fruit streams out gracefully behind. A very fine middleweight Corton from a healthy 30 hl/ha crop. Drink from 2026-2032.

Producer

Domaine Chandon de Briailles

The sibling team at this stunning domaine (Francois and Claude de Nicolay) is most definitely a winning one. Their biggest influence has been to convert the estate firstly to organic and now to biodynamic methods of viticulture and vinification. The wines focus on sensual flavours and refinement, these are not powerful, but the aged vines allow for wines of extraordinary texture and complexity.

Region

Corton

The Grands Crus of Corton, a red made from Pinot Noir, and Corton Charlemagne, a white made from Chardonnay are shared between Aloxe-Corton, Ladoix Serrigny and Pernand Vergelesses. The vines for both are planted on the hillsides underneath the plateau of Corton's woodland forest. The majorityof Pinot Noir is planted in the southern and eastern sector where the soil is naturally rich with red iron clay giving additional body and power. Overall, the wines from these areas tend to be fruit forward and fleshy with a balance of round edges and fine concentration.
