The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Au Bas de Combe Village felt quite reduced on the nose which was difficult to read. That will sort itself out with bottle age. The palate is very smooth with pastille-like purity, velvety red berry fruit with touches of dried orange peel towards what is quite a structured finish. Fine, but be patient. Drink 2024-2038

  • Burghound, January 2022, Score: 90-92

This is also attractively spicy with its layered aromas of various dark berries, earth and a whiff of plum. The highly energetic and beautifully detailed flavors possess an equally appealing texture while exuding a refreshing salinity on the slightly firmer, lingering and youthfully austere finale. This is an excellent Nuits villages and one to look for. Outstanding. Drink: 2028+

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 89-92

Rich black purple, powerful, more solid even than the Vosne but it is all good. Some blackberry. And blackcurrant leaf. Plenty of structure, very good acidity behind the natural Nuits tannins.

The Hudelots are an ancient Burgundian family whose ancestry can be traced back to Chambolle since before the French Revolution. Needless to say, wine has been in their blood for almost as long. Alain Huedlot began his wine career in 1954 working for his father and other local growers. At the ripe young age of 20, he started renting vineyards from his family in Chambolle Musigny until eventually receiving other small parcels from his father. Following a passionate and whirlwind romance with the granddaughter of Charles Noellat, he married despite protests from her family. This controversial union ensured additional vineyards despite a harrying and lengthy legal battle. Today the domaine owns a total of 10 well-situated hectares, which are split over 5 communes. Alain Hudelot’s grandson Charles Van Canneyt is a man on a mission. Having arrived at the domaine from Champagne only six years ago, he is already considered one of the brightest young talents in the region. These wines are wonderful examples of traditionally styled Burgundy - superbly pure and focused with an undeniable sense of terroir.Read less

Region

Nuits Saint Georges

The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
