  • Burghound, January 2022, Score: 92-95

A more elegant and more floral-suffused if decidedly restrained nose requires some aggressive swirling to gradually reveal its aromas of cool essence of red cherry, Asian-style tea and hints of soy and hoisin. The lilting but almost painfully intense middle weight flavors also possess excellent length on the compact, exceptionally firm and strikingly long finale. I would point out that it is entirely possible that someone trying this might find it on the lighter side in terms of what is typical for Grands Ech, yet the flavor authority makes clear this is quite serious and is a wine that should age gracefully for the next two decades. The Lamarche family have been in Vosne Romanée since 1740. Over the years and through multiple marriages, they were able to expand their earthly possessions and increase their vineyard holdings to include various parcels and plots across 11 appellations. Their most famous vineyard, which is also their flagship, is La Grande Rue, a 1.65 hectare plots in Vosne Romanée which became an official grand cru in 1992. Today the domaine is run by François Lamarche and his delightfully cheeky wife, Marie-Blanche. Their daughter, Nicole, and their niece, Nathalie, help with the vineyards and winemaking. More modern in thinking, they age all of their village, premier cru and grand cru wines in 100% new oak barrels.Read less

Region

Grands Echézeaux

One of two Grand Crus within the Flagey-Echezeaux area right in the heart of the Cote de Nuits. Much more compact and homogenous than the neighbouring Echezeaux, the Grands Echézeaux vineyards are owned by around twenty producers - very modest in Burgundian terms. The most celebrated producers include Domaines de la Romanee Conti, d'Eugenie and Mongeard-Mugneret. These fine wines are richly complex yet balanced and have enormous ageing potential.
