Goedhuis, December 2021
The Faiveley parcel of this high altitude 1er Cru faces south, hence its balance between exuberance and freshness. Stunning deep dark fruits, with a touch of cedar and truffle. The immediate impression is of exuberance and succulent flamboyance, then the fine-grained tannins unfold and the life and freshness come through on the finish. A wine which lives up to this vineyard’s stellar reputation. Erwan’s final comment, as we showed our excitement about this wine, was “of course, its soil does have the same composition as Clos de Bèze”!

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru offers impressive, delineated redcurrant and cranberry fruit on the nose, not powerful, but neat and precise. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, quite fleshy and Chambolle-like. Slightly granular in texture towards the marine-tinged finish, I would give this 2-3 years in bottle. Very fine. Burghound, January 2022, Score: 92-94
A mentholated top note is present on the aromas of kirsch, black cherry and distinct earth scents. There is more volume, mid-palate concentration and muscle to the larger-scaled flavors that are at once impressively rich yet well-delineated on the dusty, serious and built-to-age finale. This is very impressive. Sweet spot. Outstanding. Drink: 2035+

Another colour which is an elegant rather thana massive style of purple. A white pepper freshness finish reminds me of whole bunches but they don’t use it for Gevrey-Chambertin wines. Excellent alpine strawberry note, and a very fine persistent finish. Good.

Domaine Faiveley

Region
Gevrey Chambertin
The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
