  • Goedhuis, December 2020

Les Rouges is perched above Echézeaux Grand Cru on poor pebbly soil. A total gem this year. A very composed wine expressing both Pinot purity and Vosne grace at their best. A mélange of red fruit flavours, with a light granular tannic core. This has plenty of life and freshness on the finish. Delicious.

  • Neal Martin, December 2020, Score: 92-94

The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Rouges 1er Cru has "grown up a lot over the last 10 years," according to Etienne Grivot. It is one of the more reticent cuvées on the nose this year, reluctantly unfolding to reveal more tertiary red berry fruit laced with garrigue and iodine. Good complexity, but these aromatics will need time to open. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, lithe tannins. Quite compact at the moment, this has good grip and a saline, marine-influenced finish that fans out beautifully. A succinct, understated Les Rouge that will give 20-plus years of pleasure. Drink 2025 - 2048

  • Burghound, January 2021, Score: 90-93

As is typically the case, here the restrained nose is notably cooler and a bit fresher with its more floral-suffused aromas of red cherry, exotic tea, violet and rose petal. The super-sleek, intense and delicious medium-bodied flavors possess much more minerality on the markedly firmer, linear and more youthfully austere finale that makes clear that is going to need at least some forbearance before it can be enjoyably approached. Outstanding. Drink 2031+

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2020, Score: 91-94

Vibrant lively purple, with an excellent nose. Flamboyant fruit with a floral aspect, Oak comes up in support. This is showing in luxurious form today but still with the chiselled stony character beneath. All in harmony, salivating more than saline, a location which is enjoying the warmth. 4 Star

Producer

Domaine Etienne Grivot (formerly Jean Grivot)

One of the most famous names in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Grivot dates back to the nineteenth century. Over the years and marriages, the domaine grew to include vineyards in notable appellations such as Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne, the fifth generation of the family to run the estate, returned to Burgundy from work experience in California in the 1980s. He eventually took over from his father completely in 1990. Over time and through experience, Etienne has created his own style of wine, which many tasters consider to be growing in elegance. The wines remain powerful and rich, true vins de garde, which usually need several years of cellaring to soften and develop. Those patient enough to wait know that the wines of Etienne Grivot are exceptional. In 2012 his children Mathilde and Hubert joined him at the family domaine, and the three share a united vision. It is a harmonious and collaborative family team. They eschew the trend for analysing every drop of juice, and pay much more attention to the vegetative cycle of their vines. The year’s weather conditions will dictate how the team handles the grapes in the cellar far more than the complex chemical analyses which comes back from the lab.

Region

Vosne Romanée

The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
