Beginning with a floral grip, the 2019 Iron Syrah offers a seductive nose filled with red flowers, wild raspberry and dusty cherry as elegant spice tones waft from the glass. Medium to full-bodied, the wine has a fine mineral tension and firm, rocky tannins that lift the mid-palate. As the tannins loosen, the wine uncoils in the mouth, leading to a food-friendly and delightfully fragranced finish. This was made with 100% whole-cluster Syrah, and the wine rested for one year in 50% new French oak. It's delicious! 3,300 bottles produced. Drink 2022-2038.

Wines of the Year - Syrah. Iron comes from the Malmesbury side of the Swartland and is the broadest, richest and most structured of the three Mullineux soil Syrahs, with lots of extract and concentration, bloody, meaty intensity, top notes of whole bunch spices and a hint of stony reduction. I like to think of the Iron Syrah as the most ascetic of the Mullineux reds, a dense, backward, slightly ferrous number with lots of blood and guts. Inky, dense and grippy, it's a wonderfully brooding expression of the variety that will reward patience, allowing the damson and blackberry fruit to integrate fully with the tannins and 50% new wood. Drink 2025-2033.

Founded by Chris and Andrea Mullineux in 2007, this is one of the most acclaimed producers in all of South Africa and is a five-time winner of Platter's Guide’s Winery of the Year. Mullineux have built a reputation around old vineyards on granite and schist soils, producing wines of immense complexity and intensity. Their single terroir Syrahs are some of the finest expressions, rivalling the great reds of the Rhône, while their whites showcase South African Chenin in all its glory. Swartland is noted for its warm and dry summers with the nearby Atlantic acting as an air-conditioning unit, while its ancient geology has brought a mixture of unique soils. For the Mullineuxs, the “landscape bares the souls of grape vines, and in those varieties that can take the ruggedness, true personality of site is revealed.”Read less
