  • Neal Martin, July 2021, Score: 94

The 2019 Syrah Granite is a step up from the Schist Syrah, delivering much more intensity on the nose, where clove and black pepper notes, animal fur and a touch of autumn bonfire infuse the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, good acidity, gentle grip, and fine depth toward the finish. Spicebox, white pepper and clove abound, showing very good persistency on the finish. This is a wonderful Syrah from Chris and Andrea Mullineux. Drink 2023-2040.

  • Wine Advocate, December 2022, Score: 94+

Beginning with a floral lift, the 2019 Granite Syrah is gorgeous and sashays with aromas of red and black spice with juicy red fruit skin and dusty red flowers. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is refined with elements of violets, lilies and spiced red tea before displaying a mouthwatering mineral tension. The Granite Syrah continues to offer its secrets as it reveals layers of complexity upon the refined, fresh and thoughtful finish. Bravo, I'm going back for another sip! Drink 2022-2038.

  • Tim Atkin, October 2023, Score: 96

Fermented with 100% whole clusters, like all of the site-specific Mullineux Syrah, this is the most intense, backward and well-structured of the trio. Serious, compact and concentrated, it's a red that wouldn't look out of place in Cornas, with violet aromas, damson and blackberry fruit, sturdy tannins and the freshness and focus of a cool vintage. Drink 2025-2035.

Founded by Chris and Andrea Mullineux in 2007, this is one of the most acclaimed producers in all of South Africa and is a five-time winner of Platter's Guide’s Winery of the Year. Mullineux have built a reputation around old vineyards on granite and schist soils, producing wines of immense complexity and intensity. Their single terroir Syrahs are some of the finest expressions, rivalling the great reds of the Rhône, while their whites showcase South African Chenin in all its glory. Swartland is noted for its warm and dry summers with the nearby Atlantic acting as an air-conditioning unit, while its ancient geology has brought a mixture of unique soils. For the Mullineuxs, the “landscape bares the souls of grape vines, and in those varieties that can take the ruggedness, true personality of site is revealed.”Read less
