  • Goedhuis, November 2020

What a way to finish! This highlights the domaine’s huge success in 2019. The Geantets have a generous 0.45 hectare slice of this great Grand Cru, lying right next to Griotte Chambertin. Dark opaque colour, with lots of autumnal hedgerow fruit flavours and a touch of fresh fig and nutmeg. Reserved at the outset, but like an orchestral symphony it evolves, and the finish is a crescendo of flavours. Its colossal power sits quietly beneath the alcohol and bright fruit. Sensationally appealing, this is a wonderful example of a Grand Cru in every way.

  • Burghound, Janaury 2021, Score: 91-94

Moderate but not intrusive wood surrounds the very spicy aromas of red and dark cherry, black raspberry, violet and an interesting background whiff of blood orange. The is impressive volume to the caressing, succulent and quite rounded big-bodied flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract that also serves to buffer the firm tannic spine shaping the balanced finale where the structure become increasingly apparent as the finish sits on the palate. I very much like the complexity, and this too should amply repay extended cellaring. Drink: 2031+

Taking its name from founders Edmond Geantet and Bernadette Pansiot back in 1954, this domaine has grown from 7 to 22 hectares under the direction of their son Vincent Geantet and his children Fabien and Emilie. Having outgrown their historical cellars, they invested in a new winery, and their wines show all the advantages that this additional space provides. Traditionally, they de-stem 100% of their fruit and allow the must a few days of cool maceration prior to fermentation starting, which enhances the colour and aromatic content of their wines. Through a combination of old vines (plenty of centenaries in their vineyards), sumptuous fruit concentration and generous new oak they make a hedonistic style of Burgundy.Read less

Charmes Chambertin

Charmes-Chambertin is one of the nine Grand Crus vineyards within the Gevrey Chambertin area. On gentle slopes, sheltered from the elements by woods to the north, gravelly soil forces the vines to work hard. Relatively large for a Grand Cru appellation, it is hard to generalise about the wines. Often intensely perfumed and seductive, Charmes-Chambertin can be approachable earlier than its Grand Crus neighbours.
