  • Goedhuis, November 2020

The Sérafins own a third of a hectare of this Grand Cru across two different parcels: one within Mazoyères Chambertin and the other in Charmes Chambertin. Undoubtedly one of the standout Grands Crus of the vintage, this is a truly superb cuvée. Wonderfully polished with flavours of loganberry and blackberry. The wine flows through the mouth as both the tannins and layers of fruit caress the palate. With extraordinary definition, this lingers on the finish and in the memory almost forever. This is quite stupendous!

  • Burghound, January 2021, Score: 91-93

An elegant, pure and ripe yet airy mix features notes of red and dark currant, spice, warm earth and a hint of oak influence. There is a more refined mouthfeel to the bigger-bodied flavors that are at once caressing yet powerful while delivering fine length on the more complex finale. The supporting tannins are dense, but fine and this well-made and very promising effort should age effortlessly. Drink: 2034+

  • Matthew Jukes, December 2020, Score: 18.5+

Yes, as I suspected, the higher you climb up the ladder, the more fruit expression is on display and so this is, accordingly the most successful of the bunch because the fruit is indeed sublime.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2020, Score: 93-96

Deep crimson purple, not the most intensely coloured wine in the cellar but certainly the classiest in bouquet. This is real concentrated dense classical Sérafin Charmes, perfectly poised, a lively acidity, a little bit of blood orange in otherwise dark concentrated fruit, huge charm and balance, but still with the domaine’s sterner approach. 4 Star

The Sérafin family are part of the establishment in Gevrey Chambertin. From when he took over from his father in the 1960 until his recent retirement, if you ever want to get in touch with Christian, you either had to call him as the rooster crowed in the morning or long after the sun had set. The rest of the time, he was working out in the vines or deep in his cellars. The domaine is now run by cousins Frédérique and Karine who are continuing the family tradition of making bold and structured wines. Their Pinots benefit from a period of bottle age and typically express fine tertiary characteristics. They do not fine or filter their wines, and only rack when necessary. Not shy of new oak, they use up to 50% on their straight Bourgogne and often 100% on the rest of their cuvées depending on the concentration. The wines tend to be ample and fleshy, and the richest ones need some cellaring in order to better integrate the spicy, cedarwood flavours.Read less

Region

Charmes Chambertin

Charmes-Chambertin is one of the nine Grand Crus vineyards within the Gevrey Chambertin area. On gentle slopes, sheltered from the elements by woods to the north, gravelly soil forces the vines to work hard. Relatively large for a Grand Cru appellation, it is hard to generalise about the wines. Often intensely perfumed and seductive, Charmes-Chambertin can be approachable earlier than its Grand Crus neighbours.
