  • Goedhuis, December 2019

Domaine de l’Arlot is 15 hectares in total, and of them, Clos des Forêts St Georges covers 7.2 hectares. Within the appellation the Les St Georges climats are considered as their own grand cru in all but name. An extremely high quality cuvée, very layered and savoury with deep brooding autumnal fruit characters. It has a little more muscle than the Clos de L’Arlot and there is no doubting its class and potential.

  • Neal Martin, November 2021, Score: 89

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Fôrets Saint-Georges 1er Cru has quite a reduced nose that obscures some of the terroir expression, though that should lift with time. The palate is medium-bodied with rather chewy tannins, spicy and slightly East Asian in style that detracts from typicité on the finish. I've had better bottles than this. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting. drink 2023-2030

  • Neal Martin, January 2020, Score: 92-94

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Fôrets Saint Georges 1er Cru, one of the two monopoles of the domaine, is completely de-stemmed and sees around 45% new oak. Funnily enough, it has a very Vosne-like bouquet with floral aspects permeating the blueberry and wild strawberry fruit. The medium-bodied palate offers supple tannins and fine depth. Very smooth in texture, with impressive harmony. It just needs a little more tension and personality toward the blackberry-driven finish; the Clos de l’Arlot is imbued with a little more charm at present. The tannins will need several years to soften, and then this will really show its mettle. 2022 - 2038

  • Burghound, January 2020, Score: 90-93

Slightly more evident wood frames a much earthier and less elegant nose of plum, sauvage, violet and various wild dark berry aromas. There is a lovely sense of energy to the relatively supple flavors that also tighten up impressively on the robust, rustic and serious finale that possesses outstanding depth and persistence. Patience required however. Drink 2033+. Outstanding

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2020, Score: 91-93

By Arlot standards there is a slightly greater depth of colour here, but it is still in a mid-red register but bright and fresh. The fruit is darker than for either Clos de l’Arlot or Suchots, and it is very slightly sombre. Excellent intensity of fruit further back on the palate with a good mix of tannins and acidity to bring up the finale. Fair persistence too. Maybe an edge of additional brilliance has been removed by the storms but it is hard to see any clear negative effect.

Domaine de l'Arlot was created in 1987 when AXA Millésimes purchased the property in Prémeaux, just south of Nuits St Georges. Its history as a domaine, however, stretches back far into the Burgundian annals passing through the Vienot and Belin dynasties before AXA’s acquisition. The domaine’s recent history has been shaped by the influence of Jean-Pierre de Smet who ran the domaine for almost two decades before Christian Seely took over direction. In 2014 Christian installed Géraldine Godot as technical manager and winemaker. A native Burgundian, she is a qualified microbiologist and oenologist, and looks set for a bright future at this Côte de Nuits estate. The domaine favours whole bunch fermentation, seeking to produce wines with refinement and finesse. (Not to be confused with Domaine Arlaud in Morey St Denis.)Read less

Region

Nuits Saint Georges

The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
