Neal Martin, January 2020, Score: 92-94
The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Thorey 1er Cru felt a little subdued when I tasted it from barrel; perhaps it is closing down more quickly than its siblings as the winter cold settles in the cellar. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins and a little angular at the moment, but there is ample freshness on the graphite-tinged finish. A more aloof and serious Aux Thorey than in the past. It will be fascinating to see how this shows once in bottle. 2023 - 2042

Burghound, January 2020, Score: 90-93
Once again there is enough reduction present to knock down the fruit though it does seem ripe. More interesting are the vibrant, intense and highly refined medium weight flavors that also culminate in an austere, serious and very firm finish that offers notably better depth and persistence. With that said, I underscore that at least some patience will be necessary. Drink: 2030+ Outstanding

Wine Advocate, January 2020, Score: 91-93
Offering up notes of wild berries, peonies and spices, framed by rich soil tones and a deft touch of oak, the 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Thorey is medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, with a deep core of fruit, lively acids and a beautifully defined finish.

Sylvain Cathiard is one of the top growers in Vosne Romanée, a region not shy of exceptional talent. He only has around 4.25 hectares of vines, therefore the quantity that he makes is particularly small. Traditionally, Burgundy domaines are renowned for being minute in size, and he is definitely amongst the smallest. In addition, he has some of the most exceptional vineyards, which read like a Who's Who list of the Côte de Nuits, many of which are located next to grand crus sites. This combination is lethal for allocations. Too little wine with too many open hands all waiting for their fair share. SInce 2011 his talented son, Sébastien, has been running the domaine.Read less

Region
Nuits Saint Georges
The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
