Neal Martin, January 2020, Score: 92-94
The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Murgers 1er Cru is more expressive on the nose compared to the Aux Thorey, with sumptuous fruit: cassis, blueberry and raspberry preserve, plus hints of fresh fig in the background. This is an NSG that wants to be noticed. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins and a fine line of acidity. Quite structured, with a dense, rigid finish that (unlike the nose) suggests this should be cellared for several years. Impressive. 2024 - 2045

Burghound, January 2020, Score: 91-93
A softly spicy and very earthy nose speaks of a layered mix of both red and dark fruit elements. There is a highly beguiling inner mouth perfume to the appealingly textured and slightly bigger flavors that are shaped by firm but relatively fine tannins on the velvety and sappy finish. This is presently quite seductive but the structure is sufficiently prominent that I suspect that this will close down after bottling and require at least some patience before it will again be approachable. Good stuff. Drink: 2033+ Sweet spot Outstanding

Wine Advocate, January 2020, Score: 92-94
The 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Murgers is showing brilliantly, bursting with aromas of cassis, licorice, grilled meats, sweet soil tones and black plums. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, textural and enveloping, with a deep and multidimensional core of concentrated fruit, an ample chassis of powdery tannins and a long, sapid finish.

Sylvain Cathiard is one of the top growers in Vosne Romanée, a region not shy of exceptional talent. He only has around 4.25 hectares of vines, therefore the quantity that he makes is particularly small. Traditionally, Burgundy domaines are renowned for being minute in size, and he is definitely amongst the smallest. In addition, he has some of the most exceptional vineyards, which read like a Who's Who list of the Côte de Nuits, many of which are located next to grand crus sites. This combination is lethal for allocations. Too little wine with too many open hands all waiting for their fair share. SInce 2011 his talented son, Sébastien, has been running the domaine.Read less

Region
Nuits Saint Georges
The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
