  • Goedhuis, December 2019

One of the finest premiers crus in Nuits St Georges, located at the northern end of the village towards Vosne Romanée. A very scented style with flavours of damsons and blueberries. The palate expresses some vanilla oak, but this is gloriously fine. It is lavish in its fruit content and the grainy tannic texture provides both sturdiness and longevity.

  • Neal Martin, January 2020, Score: 90-92

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Murgers 1er Cru is blessed with a lovely bouquet of black cherries and touches of cassis and briar. Gorgeous. The palate is fresh and citrus-y on the entry. Taut tannins and a little compactness toward the finish, almost as if this was closing up. All the pleasure is loaded on the front end of this Les Murgers. Hopefully it will gain more flesh and depth on the finish by the time of bottling. Drink 2023-2038

  • Burghound, January 2020, Score: 90-92

An exceptionally ripe nose displays a port-like nuance on the spicy and earthy dark raspberry and cassis-suffused nose. There is better freshness on the palate along with excellent richness and concentration to the powerful and mouthcoating middle weight plus flavors that deliver fine length on the very firm finale. This is impressive in its fashion though it's a bit too ripe for me. Drink 2030+

  • Wine Advocate, January 2020, Score: 91-93

Wafting from the glass with aromas of cassis, red fruit compote, potpourri and smoked meats, the 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Murgers is medium to full-bodied, gourmand and textural, with a deep core of fruit framed by rich structuring tannins and ripe acids. This is a dramatic but nicely balanced Murgers from Hudelot-Noellat.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2020, Score: 92-94

Classic clear ripe purple all in balance. Some fresh plums just to remind you where it comes from, alongside the classic deep raspberry notes of this vintage. Riper perfume but beautifully judged, with a lovely sensual long finish.

The Hudelots are an ancient Burgundian family whose ancestry can be traced back to Chambolle since before the French Revolution. Needless to say, wine has been in their blood for almost as long. Alain Huedlot began his wine career in 1954 working for his father and other local growers. At the ripe young age of 20, he started renting vineyards from his family in Chambolle Musigny until eventually receiving other small parcels from his father. Following a passionate and whirlwind romance with the granddaughter of Charles Noellat, he married despite protests from her family. This controversial union ensured additional vineyards despite a harrying and lengthy legal battle. Today the domaine owns a total of 10 well-situated hectares, which are split over 5 communes. Alain Hudelot’s grandson Charles Van Canneyt is a man on a mission. Having arrived at the domaine from Champagne only six years ago, he is already considered one of the brightest young talents in the region. These wines are wonderful examples of traditionally styled Burgundy - superbly pure and focused with an undeniable sense of terroir.Read less

Region

Nuits Saint Georges

The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
