  • Goedhuis, November 2018

Always a highlight in the Hudelot-Noëllat cellar, and one of Vosne Romanée’s best loved premiers crus, tucked between Romanée St Vivant, Richebourg and Echezeaux. A broad and bold style, with serious structure. One can feel the weight of the savoury, rich Black Forest fruits. A wine with superb pedigree.

  • Neal Martin, January 2019, Score: 92-94

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has a beguiling bouquet of precise black cherries, wild strawberry and a hint of black olive, the mineral element tucked in just underneath. The palate is beautifully balanced with a sappy entry, sharing the marine/oyster shell influence of the Les Beaumonts but displaying great density and grip on the finish. It delivers all you wish for from a Suchots. 2022 - 2040

  • Burghound, January 2019, Score: 90-93

Here too there is a touch of wood surrounding the even spicier and more deeply pitched dark currant aromas that display Asian-tea and sandalwood nuances. The supple, delicious and nicely vibrant medium weight flavors possess a succulent, even fleshy mid-palate, while displaying fine richness on the lingering finish. This isn't quite as refined as the Beaux Monts but it's still very good. Drink 2029+

  • Wine Advocate, January 2019, Score: 91-93+

From a parcel planted in 1910, the 2017 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots is more brooding and reserved, offering up a complex bouquet of dark berries, licorice, spices and black tea. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and satiny on the attack, with a deep core that's framed by fine-grained but firm tannins that assert themselves on the mouthwateringly mordant finish.

  • Decanter, November 2018, Score: 96

Charles van Canneyt's 0.5ha block in Les Suchots was planted in 1910, which makes it the oldest at the domaine. In a vintage that stumped some producers, he has made a beautifully delineated wine that's textured and nuanced, effortlessly integrating its 40% new wood and showing a wonderful brightness and purity of fruit. The Hudelots are an ancient Burgundian family whose ancestry can be traced back to Chambolle since before the French Revolution. Needless to say, wine has been in their blood for almost as long. Alain Huedlot began his wine career in 1954 working for his father and other local growers. At the ripe young age of 20, he started renting vineyards from his family in Chambolle Musigny until eventually receiving other small parcels from his father. Following a passionate and whirlwind romance with the granddaughter of Charles Noellat, he married despite protests from her family. This controversial union ensured additional vineyards despite a harrying and lengthy legal battle. Today the domaine owns a total of 10 well-situated hectares, which are split over 5 communes. Alain Hudelot’s grandson Charles Van Canneyt is a man on a mission. Having arrived at the domaine from Champagne only six years ago, he is already considered one of the brightest young talents in the region. These wines are wonderful examples of traditionally styled Burgundy - superbly pure and focused with an undeniable sense of terroir.Read less

Region

Vosne Romanée

The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
