  • Goedhuis, November 2018

In contrast to the Mont des Oiseaux this cuvée has 40% whole bunch fruit, and its redcurrant aromatics have a lifted top note of graphite. The fruit and 45% new oak are matched well to give the wine body and structure. The tannins here feel denser than in the previous wines, and it may need a little time in the cellar before opening up.

  • Neal Martin, November 2021, Score: 92

The 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges Clos de L’Arlot 1er Cru, containing 47% whole bunches, has more delineation and amplitude compared to the previous two vintages, more floral and conveys more energy. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, good tension, quite edgy and full of energy. There is a pleasing strictness and linearity on the finish with more persistence than the 2016. Recommended. Tasted at the Domaine de L’Arlot tasting at La Cabotte in London. Drink 2021-2035

  • Neal Martin, January 2019, Score: 91-93

The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos de l’Arlot 1er Cru has quite a strict, mineral-driven bouquet with some lovely sous-bois scents derived from the 40% whole bunch fruit. The 50% new oak is also nicely integrated here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, and quite saline and compact at the moment. It needs a little more substance toward the finish, although that may well manifest during the remainder of the barrel maturation. Very fine. Neal Martin

  • Burghound, January 2019, Score: 87-90

Here too there is a discreet application of wood surrounding the fresh, cool and restrained red and dark pinot fruit where a floral top note adds a touch of elegance. The slightly more concentrated medium weight flavors possess excellent intensity though the moderately firm finish is somewhat dry and short. The clipped aspect of the finish isn't fatal but the balance isn't ideal. Drink 2024+

Producer

Domaine de l'Arlot

Domaine de l'Arlot was created in 1987 when AXA Millésimes purchased the property in Prémeaux, just south of Nuits St Georges. Its history as a domaine, however, stretches back far into the Burgundian annals passing through the Vienot and Belin dynasties before AXA’s acquisition. The domaine’s recent history has been shaped by the influence of Jean-Pierre de Smet who ran the domaine for almost two decades before Christian Seely took over direction. In 2014 Christian installed Géraldine Godot as technical manager and winemaker. A native Burgundian, she is a qualified microbiologist and oenologist, and looks set for a bright future at this Côte de Nuits estate. The domaine favours whole bunch fermentation, seeking to produce wines with refinement and finesse. (Not to be confused with Domaine Arlaud in Morey St Denis.)

Region

Nuits Saint Georges

The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
