  • Neal Martin, October 2019, Score: 89

The 2016 Vosne-Romanée Les Brûlées 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet with blackberry, briary and cracked black pepper scents, all well defined. The palate is quite spicy and grippy on the entry and the tannins just come across a little raw towards the finish.

  • Jasper Morris MW, October 2017, Score: 93

Another rich purple across the glass. A little more restrained bouquet, still flowers but a little more finesse, then an extra coating of black fruit on top of the standard with cheerful fine grained tannins behind. Some toasted notes alongside.

  • WK, April 2019, Score: 93+

Guyon's 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées is showing brilliantly from bottle, unwinding in the glass with a complex bouquet of rose petal, dark wild berries, cinnamon and dark chocolate that's complemented by carnal nuances of grilled game bird and smoked meats. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a sapid core of fruit, bright acids and powdery structuring tannins, capturing the inherently gourmand qualities of Aux Brûlées in a less dramatic register than that occupied by the sunnier 2015 and 2017 vintages chez Guyon. While the real fireworks—aromatic and textural—will come with some bottle age, it's already very impressive.

Region

Vosne Romanée

The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
