Goedhuis, November 2017
A small but fabulous parcel in the Cathiard portfolio. This vineyard sits high up the slope. The bottom half of the vineyard is classified as part of Echezeaux Grand Cru, with the smaller top section premier cru. It is perfumed with high toned red fruit. It usually shows well from barrel, and this is no exception. Outstanding.

Neal Martin, December 2017, Score: 92-94
The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru En Orveaux, matured in 60% new oak, has a gorgeous bouquet of vibrant maraschino cherry, crushed strawberry, wet limestone and light violets scents that unfold nicely in the glass. The palate is very clean and precise, smooth in texture, but the core of this wine is the inner sphere of sorbet freshness that counters the quite correct structure on the finish that is almost Morey-Saint-Denis in style. This could be the “dark horse” from Cathiard this year? It is equal to the Aux Reignots for sure. Drink 2020-2045

Burghound, January 2018, Score: 91-94
A more expressive nose is also exceptionally fresh and cool while offering a lovely blend of spicy red and blue pinot fruit that is cut with ample floral elements. The vibrant, intense and chiseled medium weight flavors also exude plenty of minerality on the saline, balanced and strikingly persistent finish. Once again there is terrific depth though this is even more firmly structured and overall this is a wine that's going to require some discipline to allow it at least 6 to 8 years of bottle age. Outstanding. Drink: 2028+

Decanter, January 2018, Score: 93
The En Orveaux wafts from the glass with notes of smoky plum, cherry, raspberry, orange rind and burning embers. On the palate the wine is sapid, deep, and glossily textural, with an ample and expansive core of sweet, juicy fruit. This is one of the more decadent wines in the Cathiard cellar this year. Sylvain Cathiard is one of the top growers in Vosne Romanée, a region not shy of exceptional talent. He only has around 4.25 hectares of vines, therefore the quantity that he makes is particularly small. Traditionally, Burgundy domaines are renowned for being minute in size, and he is definitely amongst the smallest. In addition, he has some of the most exceptional vineyards, which read like a Who's Who list of the Côte de Nuits, many of which are located next to grand crus sites. This combination is lethal for allocations. Too little wine with too many open hands all waiting for their fair share. SInce 2011 his talented son, Sébastien, has been running the domaine.Read less
Region
Vosne Romanée
The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
