  • Goedhuis, November 2017

Brilliant ruby, this wine is rich, fresh, and full of energy. Lying between Nuits St Georges’s Boudots and La Tâche, the natural muscle of Malconsorts is always expertly handled in the Cathiard cellar, and is considered the domaine’s flagship wine. The 2016 is immense.

  • Neal Martin, December 2017, Score: 94-96

The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts was showing a little more reduction on the nose compared to the other cuvées. Underneath though, lies intense and quite voluminous red berry fruit, later rose petals, a touch of woodland coming through. The palate is medium-bodied with quite high-toned entry, vivacious blueberry fruit mixed with cassis and orange pith, then closing in quickly on a structure and grippy finish (it finished its malolactic not until September so this would explain this). It will require several years in bottle. It is not quite as audacious as the 2015 Malconsorts, but certainly a prince to that king. Drink 2022-2045

  • Burghound, January 2018, Score: 93-95

There is just enough reduction to mask the underlying fruit but not the floral and spice nuances. Otherwise the dense, powerful and robust full-bodied flavors possess both super energy and minerality before delivering huge length on the balanced, austere and very tightly wound finale. This stunner is a classically styled Malconsorts that is made in a 'buy and forget you own it' style. Don't miss! Outstanding. Drink: 2031+

  • Decanter, January, Score: 94

The Malconsorts is one of the more backward wines in the Cathiard cellar, which Sébastian observes is always the case, but its considerable potential is clear. Aromas of ripe cherry, cassis, game bird, rich spice and smoky new oak are followed by a complete, full-bodied and tensile wine with superb intensity, a deep and sapid core of fruit, and lovely energy which persists through the long, penetrating finish. This is reserved, so only purchase this if you expect and intend to cellar it for a decade. Drink 2028-2050

Sylvain Cathiard is one of the top growers in Vosne Romanée, a region not shy of exceptional talent. He only has around 4.25 hectares of vines, therefore the quantity that he makes is particularly small. Traditionally, Burgundy domaines are renowned for being minute in size, and he is definitely amongst the smallest. In addition, he has some of the most exceptional vineyards, which read like a Who's Who list of the Côte de Nuits, many of which are located next to grand crus sites. This combination is lethal for allocations. Too little wine with too many open hands all waiting for their fair share. SInce 2011 his talented son, Sébastien, has been running the domaine.Read less

Region

Vosne Romanée

The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
