    The 2016 Nuits Saint-Georges Au Bas de Combe has a tightly wound bouquet, a little tertiary in style, seeming to shut down a little in the glass instead of opening. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannin, a noticeable marine influence on the mid-palate and a straightforward finish that just needs to evolve more complexity. Drink 2019-2025

    A discreet application of wood frames a ripe, fresh and attractively spicy blend of black raspberry, cassis and plenty of earth. There is a beguiling natural sweetness to the medium-bodied and generously proportioned flavors that possess a sappy mouthfeel before culminating in a youthfully austere, balanced and beautifully long finish. This is an excellent Nuits villages and worth your attention. Outstanding Top value. Drink: 2023+

    Good bright red. Slightly high-toned aromas of medicinal cherry lifted by rocky minerality. Juicy and tightly wound, even a bit hard in the early going, with its cherry, menthol and licorice flavors complicated by mint and herb nuances and even a suggestion of citrus fruits. Shows good savory extract but could use more sweetness. The tannins come across as a bit dry today.

    From a lieu-dit below the premier cru of Boudots, the Hudelot-Noellat Nuits opens in the glass with notes of game bird, plummy fruit, rich soil and smoked duck. The wine is full-bodied, structured around a firm chassis of typical Nuits tannins, with good sap and depth. Count on forgetting about this in the cellar for a decade. Drink 2022-2035

The Hudelots are an ancient Burgundian family whose ancestry can be traced back to Chambolle since before the French Revolution. Needless to say, wine has been in their blood for almost as long. Alain Huedlot began his wine career in 1954 working for his father and other local growers. At the ripe young age of 20, he started renting vineyards from his family in Chambolle Musigny until eventually receiving other small parcels from his father. Following a passionate and whirlwind romance with the granddaughter of Charles Noellat, he married despite protests from her family. This controversial union ensured additional vineyards despite a harrying and lengthy legal battle. Today the domaine owns a total of 10 well-situated hectares, which are split over 5 communes. Alain Hudelot’s grandson Charles Van Canneyt is a man on a mission. Having arrived at the domaine from Champagne only six years ago, he is already considered one of the brightest young talents in the region. These wines are wonderful examples of traditionally styled Burgundy - superbly pure and focused with an undeniable sense of terroir.Read less

Region

Nuits Saint Georges

The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
