  • Goedhuis, December 2017

One of Nuits’s finest premiers crus, located at the northern end of the village, towards Vosne Romanée. This cuvée had only recently finished malolactic fermentation when we visited in early November and had seized up a little, though it showed the structural promise to come around, hinting at dark brambly fruit and liquorice spice.

  • Neal Martin, December 2017, Score: 88-90

The 2016 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru les Murgers was showing some reduction on the nose. The palate is more readable with mainly red berry fruit, mixed with hoisin and a faint oyster shell influence. The tannins feel quite firm but not oppressive, although it just needs more weight and flesh to come through on the finish.

  • Burghound, January 2018, Score: 91-93

Reduction. The rich, full-bodied, naturally sweet and lightly mineral-suffused flavors possess good freshness and a seductive texture before culminating in an impressively complex, driving and palate staining finish. This is more refined than it usually is yet a wine that doesn't lack for power and punch. Outstanding. Drink: 2026+

  • Stephen Tanzer, January 2018, Score: 90-92

Dark red with ruby highlights. Inky aromas and flavors of black cherry, blackberry pie, licorice, mint, violet and crushed stone. Juicy and penetrating but also showing lovely sweetness and thickness of texture--and finer-grained than the Petits Vougeot. Still a bit reduced and gassy, as the malolactic fermentation only ended in late September. But this wine already displays lovely acidity and mid-palate definition and finishes with suave tannins and sneaky rising length. Quite perfumed on the aftertaste; very much a Vosne style of Nuits.

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2018, Score: 17

Really charming and packed full of fruit but with good structure and acidity too. Some delicacy. GV. Drink 2026-2040

The Hudelots are an ancient Burgundian family whose ancestry can be traced back to Chambolle since before the French Revolution. Needless to say, wine has been in their blood for almost as long. Alain Huedlot began his wine career in 1954 working for his father and other local growers. At the ripe young age of 20, he started renting vineyards from his family in Chambolle Musigny until eventually receiving other small parcels from his father. Following a passionate and whirlwind romance with the granddaughter of Charles Noellat, he married despite protests from her family. This controversial union ensured additional vineyards despite a harrying and lengthy legal battle. Today the domaine owns a total of 10 well-situated hectares, which are split over 5 communes. Alain Hudelot’s grandson Charles Van Canneyt is a man on a mission. Having arrived at the domaine from Champagne only six years ago, he is already considered one of the brightest young talents in the region. These wines are wonderful examples of traditionally styled Burgundy - superbly pure and focused with an undeniable sense of terroir.Read less

Region

Nuits Saint Georges

The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
