Neal Martin, December 2016, Score: 89-91
The 2015 Pernand Vergelesses les Vergelesses 1er Cru comes from mainly red clayey soils with a high iron content. It has a charming bouquet with blackberry, orange rind and pressed flower notes that frankly put the three 2015 Savigny-lès-Beaunes in the shade. The palate is well balanced with fine tannins, very good balance and crucially, unlike the Savigny-lès-Beaunes, there is satisfying fruité on the tensile finish. This has good potential. Drink Date 2018 - 2026

Domaine Chandon de Briailles
The sibling team at this stunning domaine (Francois and Claude de Nicolay) is most definitely a winning one. Their biggest influence has been to convert the estate firstly to organic and now to biodynamic methods of viticulture and vinification. The wines focus on sensual flavours and refinement, these are not powerful, but the aged vines allow for wines of extraordinary texture and complexity.Region
Pernand Vergelesses
With its neighbours, Ladoix Serrigny and Aloxe-Corton, Pernand Vergelesses has its own village and premier cru appellations but shares the two grand crus: Corton, a red made from Pinot Noir, and Corton Charlemagne, a white made from Chardonnay. The limestone marl soil is well-suited to growing Chardonnay and the resulting white wines are crisp and mineral with a good capacity for ageing. Pinot Noir is planted in areas of redder iron-rich soil and the best vineyards produce charmingly soft red wines with classic notes of raspberries and violets.
